Question about highly heat moldable skates?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for new skates and wanted to go toward a very highly heat moldable skate like a One100,TO, CCM CL etc... Say when I try them on a size 8 fits perfect. After they are baked will my heel push back a significant amount making the skate not as tight of a fit? Should I go 1/2 size down then get them baked or just go with what fits correct out of the box?

I've a question about these type of skates. There's been a lot of advertising in the roller forum about alkali skates being able to adapt to virtually any foot size. They state that they only need one size skate to cover all widths (c to ee). What do you skate experts think about this? If what alkali is claiming is true, then I'd use them for roller and ice.

Unless they're Adjustable width wise, the only ways to accomplish this are to put in really thick foams on the inside that will compress to the wider foot, or to provide a Taller side wall/quarter panel, that will push out and 'roll' under the foot when molded. ie.. |_| to (_).

I have only seen the Alkali's once in person and didn't try them on at all. Maybe you can ask Justin in the Alkali thread on how they accomplish this.

Your heel will sit back slightly more after baking and once the ankle padding has compressed a bit. The skate will not really "change" in overall length or width.

Wex, i'm to understand these type of skates "want" and should be baked regardless of how they feel out of the box. Thanks davetronz... I was wondering if my heel sitting back more would significantly effect the fit as i've heard sometimes it may.

If the fit is perfect out of the box, there's no need to bake.

Most of the high end skate need to be baked to get the best fit. The CCM's feel like shoeboxes when you put them on. Once you bake them they are night and day from the non baked skate.

Usually baking them just helps to fill in negative space and accelerate the break-in process.

Baking skates won't fill negative space. What it will do is allow the boot to conform to your foot where your foot contacts it.
