CCM U+ CL skate fit questions

Recommended Posts

Thinking of getting new skates, the U+ CL has come up because it is supposed to be the widest in the forefoot available. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Currently I'm in custom X60's (6 3/4 EE/A, oversized toecaps). They are getting a bit worn out and I'd rather find an alternative than going custom again on Bauers since their top skates are now $800. The EE width on the X60s were also a touch narrow in the forefoot (specifically where the boot meets the toecap) and I had to pretty regularly get that area punched, wishing I would have gone with a EEE. My foot is pretty much "V" shaped, which is the problem.

Wondering if the U+ CL skates are wider and I would have better luck trying out CCM. I'm going to go to a shop to try on skates but I just wanted some info before going in. I've also seen online that I could order these in an EE width, as opposed to the standard E width. My main quesion is whether or not these are indeed a wide skate in the forefoot and toecap area. I've read that an E in the U+ CL is wider than an EE in the Bauer supreme, true?

I've also tried a Graf G3 in the W, not wide enough. Had Bauer 8090's in the past that were EE and those were pretty good. Best skates ever were old 752 Tacks w/ pump, but from what I've read around here CCM has changed the last they use for the boot since then, unfortunately.

Just wanted to get some opinions from people with a similar problem of having a wide forefoot/toe area and if this skate (or any others) is a good fit? Maybe wait for the Bauer Nexus?

I can't speak for the U+ CLs in particular...but I certainly do have a wide forefoot. I found CCMs to be the best out-of-the-box fit for my foot.

I have a wide forefoot also. I found the x60 EE to be just a tad narrow for me. Tha is an off the shelf x60, not sure if that EE is different than a custom EE. The Bauer Supreme one 95 was also just a tad narrow, but liveable in a D width. The One 100 EE felt perfect at the shop, though I never skated in it. I also tried on the U+ CL in a EE, but it was not heated, so probably not a good sample, and it did not feel as wide as the one 100 EE.

Since the EE of the Vapor is the same width as the D in the Supreme line, why not try the EE in the Supreme line. If I am correct the Supreme is built on an oversized last, and the D is equal to a true EE, which means their EE would be more equal to a true EEE?

FWIW, the heat mouldability of the CLs are significant enough that it can be expanded considerably width wise; such as going from D to E and so on. Not as much the other way though.

I tried a bunch of different skates to accommodate my duck feet, and I found the CCM U+ to be the best. Bauer Supreme's in EE were a touch too narrow and Bauer Flexlites - although very wide in the toe cap - had a huge heel that was way too wide. The widest EE I've come across was an old Nike Quest V2. Those things are cavernous, but not even close to the quality needed to last for multiple hockey seasons.

Wow, is this true? That seems like a big difference. If that's the case I will definitely try a Supreme. It's been a while since trying on skates, but I remember trying on the NBH one95s and them not working, but I can't remember what width I tried. But while I'm at the shop I might as well give it another go if this is the case.

Curious how this works? Could you please explain in more detail.

What width did you get?

D = E

Surprisingly I ended up in a D width. I should be in a 9.5 E, but one foot is slightly longer than a 9.5, so by going to a 10 the D width worked.

tvaughan, the entire boot (save for the toecap) really softens up once you bake them properly (more or less the same in the U+12s) and once they are fitted to your foot, laced up and all, the boot can better form to the width of your forefoot. Imagine sometihng like ( _ ) as opposed to | _ | . D widths have the ability to push into the E and so on, but not the other way around.

I have a question related to this and wanted to see if anyone can help.

I currently wear a NBH one95 8.5 EE skate. They fit great, but are totally shot. I have a pair of U+ CL 8.5 E (they seem to fit but left foot has pressure that baking might eliminate) and pre-ordered 20K 8.5 EE. Does anyone know if the U+ CL in an E width is the same as the 20K in EE width, or is 20K going to be wider?

I would love to cancel my pre-order and go with the skates I have, but want to make sure that I won't be regretting this decision.

Thanks for any advice.

Ended up buying TotalOne skates, 7EE. They fit great. Skated in them 3 times now and no complaints. Can't wait until they are fully broken in.

Tried on the U+ CL, and RBK 11k, in 7E and they were both too narrow in the area of concern for me, right were the toecap and boot meet. I was able to bake the U+ CL when trying them on too and no dice.
