Going from wood to composite?

Recommended Posts

Hey!

I'm playing with a Sher-Wood 9950 PMPX wooden stick, P77 Coffey curve, 5.5 lie, flex 105. I really like it, its great for a wooden stick, but its really heavy compared to composites. Everyone I play with have composites so I thought I would get one too, it is better I would guess.

The problem is that when I try some of them out, the puck handling is a lot harder, I loose control of the puck all the time. Is this something anyone else has experienced? If so, I guess it's just a matter of adjusting to composites right?

I also wonder if someone knows any composites sticks that resambles the one I have right know? So the transition isn't that big. Will a composite with 105 flex be as stiff as a wooden 105 flex? I read something that because of the kick point, it does feel different. But let's say I only need get adjusted to composites in that case too?

Then I only need to find a stick that has a curve similar to P77 Coffey? You know it? http://www.hockeymon...e-patterns.html

Maybe Sherwood 9950 IC Composite stick would work? Havent heard anything about it though? Any other suggestions on that matter?

Thanks!

Why not try a composite shaft with a wood blade? That way the puck feel will be very similar to the all wood stick and Sherwood makes your curve on wood blades, you'll just be cutting a lot of weight by using the shaft.

I think you're on the right track. If the Coffey curve is important, I'd go with the 9950 IC Composite. I think it might only come in a 95 flex. A 105 flex should feel pretty similar whether it's wood or composite. There is some variation between brands, and generally low kick sticks tend to feel stiffer than a mid-kick counterpart with the same flex rating. The only composites I know of that have that curve are sticks/blades with the Combat CC curve. You could (as steelnation248 said) get a shaft/blade combo, and find a shaft with a kickpoint and stiffness you like, then install either a Sherwood Coffey blade (wood or composite) or a Combat CC blade. Composites take a little time to adjust to in terms of stickhandling and catching passes, but once you get used to them and you see the benefits they provide for shooting, most people prefer them.

i had a similar issue when i finally made the composite transition 4 years ago, i think a lot of it for me was just getting used to the lighter stick, and the feel. i still havent gotten fully used to the feel difference, but im making it work pretty well, the positives being my shot quickness and stick quickness is vastly improved.

That stick would probably be a good start. That one is still a little heavy for a composite, but it will be a good middle ground from what you are used to and the lighter composites. If you want something really nice for the money, get the Sherwood T90 in Coffey. But be prepared, it is a lower kick point and very light, so it will probably feel like a piece of plastic in your hands until you get used to it and trust it.

Also, adding a little more tape to the blade (such as a strip of tape from heel to toe then taping over) can help deaden the composite blade a bit. I haven't found the T90 too awkward, but I slowly transitioned from using wood sticks as a teen, two piece with wood blades, to two pieces with cheap composites, to this.

Thanks for your suggestions! I think I will check that T90 out! A two-piece with wooden blade is a good idea, but I think its best for me to just learn to play with a one piece, just do it so to speak! I know Warrior Dolomite once came with a Smyth curve that was wonderful but I can't find it anymore.

Sherwood has the Smyth curve in their 2012 catalogue. Seems to be availible on the Nexon N8, 10, and 12.

Sherwood has a new Smith pattern. It is not the same as Warrior's Smyth pattern. Although, it sounds like they could be similar, but it is not a rerelease of another companies pattern.
