Helmets

What helmet would you guys recommend for good ventilation in roller hockey? I just had my first game using an old Nikebauer 5500 and had sweat dripping down my face.

if it fits your head, the Easton S19 is pretty good and one of the lightest around. imho it offers better ventilation than other comparable models such as CCM V10, Rbk 8k, Bauer 9500 or 9900 or Easton S17.

However I haven't had the luxury of trying the Rbk 11k or Easton E700 yet.

VN foam (Bauer 4500, Reebok 4k) absorbs sweat better than EPP foam (Bauer 5500/7500/8500). That's what I've noticed anyway

I would second a head cap and/or a VN foam helmet. I'm currently using a CCM V08. It was perfectly ventilated for ice hockey, but for roller I have sweat dripping all over my face during practices despite the better absorption from the VN foam. Assuming you're not playing the whole time and you have shift changes, it should be fine for games. I'm not sure there's a helmet that can completely eliminate the sweat dripping simply because there's no ice surface to cool the air for roller.

I've used VN foam for quite a while and always had sweat dripping all over. I recently got a s19 and its extremely light and well vented. Still have sweat dripping down my face but its not near as bad as my old VN helmet. You're going to sweat no matter what helmet you use just bring a small towel or something to wipe your face on the bench.

or get some headbands and either wear them under your helmet or cut them into quarters and use velcro (stitched onto the headband piece and the other side glued onto your helmet) to attach them to the inside front of the helmet. I sweat excessively so and the headband does the trick of keeping it out of my eyes.

The Cascade M11, designed by Mark Messier is a fantastic helmet, best head protection on the market today. One of the best for ventilation as well. Check them out.

Just because they claim its the best head protection doesn't mean it is. There are many reports of head lacerations caused by them. Just for that reason I avoid it.

It's not just a claim, they ran a series of impact tests. Not only does the M11, take a bigger 1st impact and transfer less energy to the head. But their real benefit is on the 2nd, 3rd (and so on) impacts. The impact material, a series of cones recover from the initial impact far better then standard EPP foam (which most other helmets use).

Not to highjack this thread but, (ever notice how those kinds of statements are always followed by what its 'not' suppose to be) Whats a good helmet for a narrow head? Oval like and boarder line egg shape. I have a s19 now and the front to back fit is fine but the side to side not so much.

Ok, but bauer has also ran a lot of tests on their re-akt and 9900 helmets. But a warning to the OP: search M11 on the forum. There is a lot of detailed accounts of people getting cut by the helmet.

Also, a helmet only protects the best if it fits the persons head correctly. Try on helmets if possible.
