Proper Fitting Skates?

Recommended Posts

I posted this is a 'lost thread' and wanted to repost to see if anyone can help with skate fitting......

I have questions regarding skate fitting. I've read alot so far and watched youtube videos..etc.

I went to a bigger LHS and tried on a few different skates. It was a superstore in area and had all brands except for graf. I tried on the display skate on the rack since they were 'my size' and price range. I told the employee i wasn't going to buy today, but wanted to get a feel of different skates since its been 12+ years of trying new skates on. I spent an hour trying on different skates (only right foot), he brought me a pair of skates vapor x4.0 7.5D to try on both but i told him to continue what is was doing because i felt bad ( he didn't care either since he was just hourly employee and vacuuming the store, it was empty).

basically all skates felt 'good' the first go around. all were 7.5D which would be 1/2 size smaller than the box posted fit ( i know that doesn't mean anything). Bauer supreme one6 didn't feel too good where little toe and forefoot was. Reebok 9k felt good. Vapor x.40 7.5D felt too small on right foot and i found a last years Vapor x30 8D, tried both on and felt good. my current skate are Vapor x15 8EE which i can't even feel toe cap. x30 8D felt toe cap and retracted.

I tried on the CCM U12 to compare the fit to the U+Pro (which may buy used, pending proper fit), was the 1st skate i put on (only right foot), felt great. then i tried on the others and went back to the U12 and felt alittle cramping on outside of arch. I could slightly feather the toe cap standing and bending knee foot would go back in. I don't know if that cramping will go away with molding them? Will new footbed like superfeet help in this or with fitting in general?

My problem is that ALL skates felt good, which isn't good. one thing i havn't been able to find good info on fit is how the foot is suppose to feel around the widest part of foot (balls of feet area) forefoot? on NONE of the skates was that area 'tight', i don't recall specifically being loose but not 'like a glove'. on any skate, How is this part supposed to feel when fitting the right skates? will this part kind of mold when baking?

I was leaning towards the Vapor X30 since they felt decent and are $150. (and look the same as my x15s and my wife won't tell the difference and give me crap for buying new skates) but I don't truely know what is the skate for my foot. Im waiting to meet the guy with the U+Pro to compare but im confused on whats proper fit. I really don't want to spend alot of money now because im uncertain of what is right for me and don't want to have to do this again for awhile.

Sorry for such a long post, but don't want to spend the money and get something wrong. Im also a bad decision maker when it comes to buying/spending money.

Thanks!

Being one who wasted a ton of money with bad fitting skates, my best advice is to try as many skates as you can and not rush.

Put the skates on, lace it until snug. Walk around a bit see if your foot slides around. If it doesn't, you're on the right track.

Here is my best piece of advice. Keep those skates on for at least 15 minutes. If they start to cramp up, or feel uncomfortable, try on a different pair of skates.

Good luck

And don't let the salespeople rush you into a purchase. I fell into that trap the first time I bought skates as an adult.

Thanks guys, I will take my time when i go back to buy skates. but is the skate supposed to fit completely snug in the forefoot area? On all skates, when i move my toes to touch the toe cap, my forefoot does raise/move a bit. Is this ok? if thats the case, i will most likely pick the x30s since they felt the 'best' in my price range.

You don't want that area to be too tight. It should be snug and supportive, but comfortable.

If you aren't in dire need of new stakes you should consider sticking with what you got until you have enough money to move into a higher end model.

I need new skates ASAP because my current skates are too big and wide. Im just getting back into the game after a long break, only playing 1-2 times a week. Don't want to spend alot of money on higher end skates as i don't think i really need them. Maybe for next pair but just want to get something that fits correctly right now so i can use and play this season coming up in.

If you're only playing 1-2 times a week I recommend going with mid-level skates.

No skate brand fits the same, even different lines of the same company. Try different brands while focusing on heel lock.
