Good starter composite with low kick point

Recommended Posts

What is your reasoning for this Chadd?

A couple things, most people learning don't have great form, they often use sticks that are too stiff and the ultra low kickpoint sticks play stiffer than marked. If someone learns how to shoot with a stick like that and then moves to a "normal" tapered stick, they could be in for a very expensive experience. You could also be looking at a lot of blade damage from the down force required to load the shaft.

after reading through this post and some others I think I'm going to start with a blade/shaft combo to try and figure out the right blade pattern.

Looks like the Bauer Supreme One may be a good shaft to start with? Is that a good one or do you have other suggestions? Looks like the Easton Mako comes in a non low kick point shaft also. About the shaft/blade combo, do you have to use the same manufacturer? Can I use Bauer shaft/easton blade? I know if you use a standard shaft it has to be standard blade, not tapered/low kick point.

i played years ago when the decision on which stick was much easier. seems like the technique to taking a slap shot is different too when learning how to use the flex to your advantage. a little overwhelming at first especially for somebody like me and my slight OCD.

If you're going to go for the shaft/blade combo I highly recommend Base. They are very affordable and have lots of options for flex. I use a Base shaft with a Warrior Dolomite DD blade and it's a very nice combo

First of all, there is a difference between tapered sticks and low kickpoint sticks. I know the marketing with tapered sticks and OPS at first was about lowering the kickpoint, and it is lower than on a traditional shaft. However, the newer sticks like the Vapor series have an even lower kick point, and that is what most people now talk about when they refer to a low kickpoint stick. Those are also the ones I was referring to as being less than ideal. The blades are all interchangeable from one brand to the next, though, so you will be fine if you do that.

If you do go standard, both the Easton and Bauer shafts are excellent, as is the Warrior AK. There are also a number of good tapered shafts on the market as well, though blades for tapered shafts can be a little more difficult to find in some shops. The Warrior Dolomite or Mako tapered are both good choices.

Just going to point out that, regardless of what lie it's listed at, I seem to remember the Rbk Datsyuk being a fairly low lie curve, certainly lower than something like an Easton Iginla. If the lie of the Datsyuk is just right for you, you might be better off going with a Modano/PM9 type curve in a different brand as opposed to an Iginla type curve, even if the Modano/PM9 is a smaller, more heel-y curve that the Datsyuk. On the other hand, if you can handle a higher lie curve, then an Iginla type curve should work well.

Or, just stick with Rbk and get a Datsyuk curve. The Ai5 is supposed to be a good mid-range stick.

the datsyuk is listed as a 6 lie. when you say it's a fairly low lie do you mean like a 4 or 5 lie (bigger angle between blade and shaft)? I know the Iginla is listed as a 5.5 so I thought that is a lower lie than the datsyuk 6.

i think i actually have a point of reference now.

i've been using a ccm u+06 with a tavares curve which is a 6 lie. it's an 85 flex. i cut down the stick about three inches. it comes to about my upper lip when i'm in skates. i'm 5'8 193 lbs. i looked at the bottom of the blade and the tape is most worn (down to the blade) at the heel. actually, from the heel it is worn down about the width of the roll of tape x 2. so from what I read that means I should go with a lower lie (bigger angle). would that mean i should get something about a 5.5 or even 5? 4?

as far as the blade on the tavares goes, i like the mid curve with straight face. i haven't tried one out, but i don't think i'm going to like blades with open faces. you never know though. i can lift my wrist shots, pass decently, stick handle ok and receive passes. slap shots are still on the ground but i'm still a newb on ice (i've been playing ice for two months, but played occasionally on ice as a kid. i did grow up playing street hockey until about 18 so i have a decent idea how to shoot).

as far as flex goes, i don't feel it. i cut it down 3 inches or so, so i'm guessing it's about a 90 flex. but being a low end composite from what you guys say it's not going to have much of a flex no matter what.

think i changed my mind about shaft/blade combo. i'd rather buy a one piece in the 100-150 range and stick with it for a while. keep the tavares as a backup.

i play forward so i don't take many slappers anyway.

does the info above help with what lie and flex I should go for? i know blade curve is going to be personal preference, but i thought the info above would help narrow things down.

i think i'm actually going to buy a mid flex like a reebok ai 5, sherwood t90 or bauer supreme and a low kick like easton mako, some type of warrior, reebok 11k or the new easton stealth 65 that's coming out.

thinking about going for an 85 flex in a mid kick and 75 in the low. or would 75 be better in both?

trial and error is going to be your (unfortunate) best bet. I've tried lots of different sticks but always seem to enjoy a "mid" kick stick the most as it fells right to me.

IMO the $100 price point is the best bang for your buck. At your level I believe you'll enjoy the AI, T90, Supreme series the best.
