Boot tear at the heal

Recommended Posts

I just started skating again, after a long layoff, in February. Just went to a few public skates and stick and pucks before jumping into a low level league in July. I've basically been playing games once a week since then, with random stick and pucks thrown in here and there. Last week, during the game, I took a shot off the heal of my boot and when I went to throw my skates in my bag for tonight's game I noticed a decent tear in the heal that even went through the carbon fiber-ish material. I can't think of any other time when my skate has been smacked back there, and the cut isn't nice and clean like I'd figured another skate would have done. Wondering if this can be repaired? Should I even bother? I'm a bit annoyed that the skates are just ~8-9 months old and this happened.

Epoxy seems like a good idea. I'd go with some a little thinner and therefore more likely to saturate the fibers than JB Weld, but that is likely not critical.

If I'm not mistaken there is a plastic cup for the heel behind there that provides the real impact protection.

That must've been a hell of a shot that can tear and go that deep. I don't think you even need to warriory about it and just keep playing. I'd say jb weld instead of epoxy. Ive found epoxy is more likely to shatter in cold more than jb weld, at least, the type of epoxy mix i've used.

Thanks guys. I wasn't sure if the fix had to be any "fancier" than that - took care of it last night.

Yeah, it basically ripped right to the plastic in the heel.

I can't say for certain it was that shot, but it was really the only thing I remember even coming close to my heel in the game last week, and I know it wasn't there before that game. It really wasn't deep, just 2 layers - the plastic/rubber outer layer and the fiberglass second layer.
