new skates, vapor, supreme, or different

Recommended Posts

currently been skating on vapor x 4.0 for the past six months since I've started. Play 2 games a week and usually do 1-2 stick and shoots a week. My issue with the skate is that my ankle doesn't feel locked in all the way so I tie them tight. then I cut off circulation. If I leave them looser, I don't feel locked in and don't feel i have the right support. also, the top of the boot is digging in to the side of my leg if I crank the laces down. i've tried to tie them every way I can, worn different socks etc.

I've been thinking about going over to the supreme line since they have a smaller ankle. I've tried them on in the same size vapor i have. ankle feels really locked in and supportive. how tight should it be back there? length is ok with supreme. i definitely have more width in the forefoot of the supreme. there is a little bit of space between my foot and side of skate.

i've tried on reebok and ccm. way too wide. haven't explored grafs.

somebody recently suggested that I try a higher end vapor. he said they may be more fitted than the lower end. would that be an option? how high up should I go?

Also, as far as the supreme go. is it ok to have that extra width in the forefoot? like i said, it's just a little. not sure if it's better to be locked in at ankle and have some extra room in the forefoot, or not as locked in at ankle, but width is good in forefoot.

While it is true that different level skates within the same line can and will fit differently, if you search these threads at all, you'll see that it is difficult to make suggestions about what might fit better over the internet. For better or worse, skate fitting is something that simply needs to be done in person. Accordingly, the advice is always the same. Go to the LHS and try on as many as you can. Buy what fits best.

However, before you go down that expensive road, since your skates are still fairly new (and assuming you have no other issues with them), you may want to try out superfeet or some other ortho insoles as an option. They not only help with alignment, but they take up a bit more volume in the boot which can help lock in your heel. It's certainly cheaper than new skates, and in the case of superfeet anyway, if they don't work you can take them back for a full refund within 30 days or something, which is more then enough time to determine whether they're worth it for you.

Personally, I always roll with superfeet yellow in my skates. It just works for me. But then, that's just me. you may be different, but it's worth a shot for sure.

I have tried a lot of skates on so I was really wondering about the heel lock vs width in forefoot. which is more important for the right fit.

i do have yellow superfeet and love them. i think they may be adding to my volume issue in the vapor. i fail the pencil test miserably and then i crank down on the skates cause the ankle doesn't fee locked in. i took the superfeet out and felt like i couldn't skate. i want to keep using them that's why i was thinking supreme. supposedly more volume.

I see.

For what's worth, I'm in the supremes (One70) and love them. The vapours were too narrow in the forefoot for me, so I can't really comment on the volume difference because I couldn't get past that width issue.

If the width of the vapors work for you already... hmmm... I don't know.... someone with more knowledge then I might need to chime in.

My experience......

I was on a pair of Nike/Bauer Supreme One55's. I found that the forefoot was too wide (not much, but the front of my foot had movement) and they didn't lock my heal down like I needed. I was also using the gray shock doctor insoles which I really liked in the skates.

I switched to the Bauer Vapor X 4.0 earlier this year after trying them on in the LHS. The forefoot was almost too tight, volume/depth was about perfect, and the heal lock was a lot better. After baking them twice they felt perrrrrfect except length was an issue. The skates were just a hair to small. But if I went up a half size then they were definitely too big. I had to switch to the yellow superfeet insoles because the shockdoctor insoles were to thick.

End result. . .now that the skates are broken in here is the result in fit. Volume is great. I'd probably just skim by the pencil test. Length is perfect. The ankles are tight enough, but I am getting minor heal raise. To fix this I purchased a pair of hockey socks made by Stable 26. They produce socks that have a rubber-like inserts to fill up negative space at the heal. I LOVE them. They fixed the heal raise issue and are actually top notch socks in my opinion. I don't even bother tightening the lower half of the skate and only crank down over the heal/ankle area. I have VERY skinny ankles and have low volume heals. I have yet to find a brand that eliminates heal lift for me when using a retail skate. However, I haven't dove into the diff Graf models yet. Hope this helps.

I have tried a lot of skates on so I was really wondering about the heel lock vs width in forefoot. which is more important for the right fit.

My 2 cents is heel lock is the #1 priority. Forefoot "snugness" #2. Correct depth #3 and length #4. Not to say that any of those aspects should be way off, but if you do have to make a compromise to get retail skates to fit, that would be my order of importance.

If your heel is in solid, forefoot not moving around, and you are not getting cruched by lace-bite, a 1/4 inch length beyond the perfect toe feathering fit wouldn't kill you. But shoot for the ideal fit and don't stop until you have found it or have tried on everything you can. Then assess and make your "slight" compromises.

No to the Easton's

With the yellow superfeet I fail the pencil test miserably. Length is perfect. Not locked in all the way unless I crank down. I'm surprised u weren't locked in with supreme but are with vapor. Sum premed now are definitely more narrow in the ankle
