Skate blade question

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm just getting back into skating and playing after 23 years (just for fun with some guys from work). I had my skates sharpened at a reputable shop but my left skate would not bite into the ice even though it felt sharp. I looked at it yesterday and noticed it was bent along the length.Thought the sharpening guy would have pick up on this. I was able to straighten it but am wondering if it is now a weak point and should be replaced. The skates are Beuer Supreme (circa 1979) with Tuuk blades. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

holy moly 1979?

hang 'em up & retire 'em - they don't owe you anything.

Get some new skates, you won't be sorry and it will give you added incentive to dive back into hockey.

I've thought about that too but at 51 I'm not sure how much longer I'll be playing. I'd hate to lay out $$ for new skates and only play one or two seasons. I guess I'm kinda cheap

Have skates improved that much?

Skates have improved remarkably since you last bought a pair, but the blades should be ok on your pair. At 51, you would be in the middle on my team. We have a guy that is 68 and still skates better than most of us that are half-2/3 his age.

LOL the Goalie on our team is 73!! Check out the deals they have going on online you could pick up a pair relatively cheap and you'll probably enjoy the newer technology. Don't ask too much from the local shops they don't pay attention to detail. If you want a great sharpening Noicingsports.com is a good place to go they help me out alot even with all my questions. Jim is a great guy too. Hope that helps

Go to a shop who has a blade straightener. have them straighten it. Then skate on it. If the bend comes back, go to a shop that can remove some rivets and rerivet the holder with the blades straight. problem solved, shouldn't cost more than $10.

I agree with the others, at 51 you are a youngster! Hockey is something that can be played into the 70's. I'm 56, most of the guys I play with are now over 50. We have great hockey still.

Sadly, a lot of shops don't have them anymore. None of the local shops here have them, they just try to sell new steel when blades bend.

Thanks for the advice and words of encouragement. I'm going to check out another local pro shop that says they are a full service shop and see what they have to offer.
