Need help picking out the most protective hockey pants.

Recommended Posts

So I was playing a game and as I was coming off the bench (I have no idea how) but I slipped badly, both of my feet went high up into the air and after about 2 seconds of air time I landed flat on the right side of my ass (backside of my femur). Not only did everyone laugh at me (don't really care), but my ass hurts so bad I can't sit right. I'm honestly super pissed off right now because it hurts so bad. I'm such an oaf.

The thing is I currently have Bauer Supreme One80 Senior Medium size pants. The only padding they have on the backside is a very thin sponge. Not sure what exactly it's supposed to protect. It really only covers the tailbone, barely, but the femur sits basically right in the crease so you get no protection whatsoever. I've had these pants for about a year now and I'm disappointed. I've fell on my ass in them before, but it's never hurt like this. I play really conservatively right now because I'm afraid of falling.

I've decided money doesn't matter and I want to find the pants with the most protection for the ass that I can find. I'd like to pick out something from Sportchek because I have a 20% off coupon from there.

Any ideas guys?

I'd suggest checking out all top-of-the-line pants. You may not be able to see them all in person, but you can check out videos on IW, youtube, etc., to at least get an idea.

The supreme one80s would be perfect if they had enough butt protection. But it's just a thin strip. Is there a way to mod it myself? That's really all I'm looking for. The warriors look really good, pricey but they're made in Canada. I'm going to look into them more tomorrow once I get all the measurements and fit down. Seems like it's a one shot deal as they're custom so no returns.

Do you yourself have any other recommendations?

Thank you! Shipping is cheap too. Once I' get the fit down I may just pull the trigger,

imo, after having taken a look at about every top line pant for pretty much the same reason(tailbone padding), i've come to the convlusion that top of the line ccm's seem to have the most in that area. the new cl's are awesome but a bit pricey. i see that sportcheck also has the previous generation u+ 09. imo, they have about the same amount of ass padding as the current topline cl's, but are a bit heavier. great value, though, if price is an issue. the only downside to ccm's for some is that they do seem to run a bit shorter size for size compared to other company's as well as having shorter kidney padding...both which actually work well for me.

They run a little big. Research them on google and YouTube first.

I saw that. I used their online fitting and medium seem to be the right fit for me. Same measurements as my One80s. I should probably visit a store that has them.

My number one priority right now the butt. Seeing as I spend a good time of the game there.

But the CCM U+ 09 are a great price. So if they have the most ass padding that's all I'm looking for. I could basically get them for $80 (maybe even cheaper during Boxing Week).

Speaking of which, what do you think about the crazy strongs?

CCMs in the same size will run shorter than your Supremes.

The EQ50s are quite protective in that area, as are the Reebok 9Ks.

I know someone's going to suggest Tackla and i would too normally, but iirc, they're all gone in medium (48). Same with Eagles.

most pants don't have a ton of padding on the butt, even high end or really protective pants.

So there's really nothing I can do?

Eastons been good for me. I'll have to check these out as well.

Cut a slot on the surface liner, stuff in plastics or foams. Cannibalize from old/unused gear if you have to and you'll avoid having to buy a new pair.

I love my 9000s and think they're damn near bulletproof, but there isn't all that much there.

So there's really nothing I can do?

Check out everything you can find and see if anything feels better to you.

Interesting suggestion. Pretty clever. Unfortunately I don't have any old gear to salvage parts from.

Sorry, I don't. I've never paid much attention to padding in that area, as I've never had a serious impact there that the combination of flesh and pants didn't handle.

As far as DIY, there's the possibility of getting some kind of padding and stuffing it into your underwear, or sewing it to the padding in the pants. It's a kludge, but sometimes that's all you've got. It would also probably be cheaper, allowing you to keep pants that you like otherwise.

No problem. But I'm alone on this issue? Feel that much worse now. I mean I'm a pretty bad player, but now I'm on a whole new level that I need extra protection. Great.

Hit up a Play it Again or drop by a Value Village/Goodwill if you're in the area. You could take any sort of plastics or foams as you see fit, doesn't have to be from old pants, but the shape of the pieces would make it easier for you.

Good luck!

Alright, going to give this a try over the weekend. Thanks.

I don't think it has anything to do with your ability. And I'd have to think that the reason that there isn't much padding there is that the type of fall you had must be quite unusual.

I agree that you could try any type of padding to start with, cheap stuff from a craft/fabric store, foam from old cushions, anything just to try it. You can cut and carve it to suit your application. That's what I used to do when I was a kid with no money.

I see. I like taking on projects so I will actually try to rig something up myself now. Not only is it more satisfying, but I'll save money and have it exactly to my liking.

I have the same pants too and i can kind of understand what you are saying. My beef with the pants are mainly the sizing. im 5'10 and 185lbs and i got a size Medium and have to tighten the laces and belt system to the tightest. Im getting suspenders to make them feel more secure on me. I should've gotten the Vapor cause i heard those are a more fitted pant but you live and learn! those will be my next pant
