Need help finding new skates

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for some new skates, after skating the last 6 months in my ccm u+ pro, I'm just not 'comfortable' in them. First, the tongue is horrible since its not a felt tongue. I had bad lace bite on my one foot but that was fixed with a gel pad. The next big issue was i also had bad lace bite on the top of my instep on the same foot. (this is my slightly larger foot), this issue was fixed with the over under lace pattern in that area. I also can't tie my skates tight over my insteps as it will make my feet cramp up bad after about 15-20min on the ice. So my laces are 'loose' throughout the whole skate except the top 4 eyelets that I have to really crank down to keep my heel in place.

I'm tired of having to lace up my skates just right to not get any cramping of my feet. I also use superfeet and it did initially help but still get serious foot cramps with even tightening over my insteps alittle.

Could this be that my skates don't have the proper arch support for my feet?

I am going to try on as many skates as possible and get the best one that fits but I am a bad decision maker when it comes to this, last time I did this most felt good.

I don't know how good my lhs is at fitting but I'm trying to narrow it down before I try on every skate, I think i need a deep boot but not as deep as the nexus. what skates are best for a high instep and low arch? but still alittle deep in the ankle?

I was thinking the ccm CL because they are real moldable but I get cramping in my u+ pros. I also heard that reeboks aren't very deep in the instep. I would like to see if the vapor x.7 or apx will fit or even the TOs.

Basically im looking for a skate that is comfortable and dont have to loosen here, tighten here, gel pad here to have no pain...

I know the only solution is to try on as many skates as possible and pick the one that fits best but I'm just trying to eliminate some if they won't work for my kind of feet. Also, I would like to try grafs but they dont carry them at my lhs.

Thanks in advance

yeap from what I see you will need a boot with a higher volume;

the supreme line would be a good choice from what I'm seeing. I've heard & read so many good reviews and how people are enchanted by them, I think they'll be a good match.

It looks like the primary issue is volume and perhaps width. Try to see if you fit a D or EE in skates. If you're tempted by grafs, then I'd suggest the flexlites (on sale :p ).

But you do know that you need to try on the skates beforehand so that's good.

I'd definitely stay away from the vapor line, and perhaps try the pencil test next time you try on a skate.

I honestly think it isn't possible to find a pair that you don't need to modify if your feet differ. I have similar probles, and do does one of my teammate. You'll see us tying our what's a few times during a game just to get the feel right again. I Think the main thing is to get the back heel to instep right for you, then modify the tightness after. From experience the rbk, ccm lace lock really help in that regard. But they have to fit you first. I Had three injuries to Mt right foot that made it hard to fit in rbks again. Graff 709 Fit then perfectly. Maybe graf is something you should also look to gift better fit.

I know you don't want to try on everything, but try on everything. People are often mistaken when it comes to the shape of their foot.

If the Supremes aren't wide and/or deep enough I'd look at the Nexus line. Those are suppose to be even wider and deeper than the Supremes. Definitely take your time and try on every skate possible.

Thanks for the responses guys, my worry is I'm going to get a skate that feels good at the store, then when I start skating on them, either get lace bite or foot cramping. Im not a pro at skate buying as Ive been out of the game for years, but I know what I have doesn't fit right if i need to keep them 'loose' throughout the skate and tighten only the top 4 eyelets.

Should i do the pencil test down the whole skate? My instep bone is alittle high, but the width of my feet at widest (forefoot) is between a D/E on a Bauer foot measurer. I skated on a Vapor EE for alittle, I could have probably gone 1/2 so my toes touch toecap but felt way too wide as I could fully curl my toes in them. A few months back, I tried on a couple of different skates, the supremes felt good but the toecap didn't feel wide enough, the edge of the toecap where it gets sewn onto the boot was jagging into my pinky toe/ edge of foot. CCMs felt pretty good too but the ones I have now feel good if I lace them up tight and walk around a bit. But once I start skating on them its another story. The cramping of feet gets bad, luckily i tie them up in a way where it won't hurt but Im wondering if its caused by bad arch support? I also use superfeet, isn't that supposed to give me the proper arch support for low arch?

Superfeet isn't an arch support, it's a heel support designed to keep your legs (knees, ankles, heel) in line for better control of your edges and skates. If it WAS designed to be an arch support, that part of the structure would be a bit more forward than what it is now.

Superfeet has worked well for people with any arch type, but it isn't a product made for everyone and the degree of benefit varies from person to person.

If the shop will let you, you could bake the skates and take them home unsharpened and sit around the house with them on for a while with skateguards on. If you can't get them baked, perhaps you could grab the pair that felt the best out-of-box and do the above.

Make sure you spend 20-30 minutes in the skates. Walk around the shop, do some knee bends and just get into some skating body positions. It's the only way you're going to know how they feel after a while on the ice without getting on the ice.

I agree Chadd - however, I have always had concerns every pair I purchased, that sure, they feel nice on my feet in the store, when I walk around, etc, but until you actually step onto some ice and "skate" in them, only then will you know. At least for me that's the case. I got a chance to skate briefly in the NXG when Bauer had their Bauer World day here, and WOW! As I mentioned, I would never know for sure how they will feel on the ice, without actually skating in them.

That unfortunately, is not what happens when you go to buy skates generally.

But yes, I think I agree 100% with what Chadd said.

With my uncertainty, it will probably be an all day thing trying on skates to decide, if not a 2 day thing....the lhs is gonna hate me...

Which skate is considered wider and deeper? CCM or Supremes D widths?

CCM is slightly wider and deeper. Watch out for the toecaps though, as a Supreme toecap is a boxier fit whereas CCM's is rounder. Depends on your foot again.

Should've gone to Winterfest on the same day...no NXGs to skate on but it would've been more fun. LOL
