Kessel'sOversizedSuit 18 Report post Posted January 2, 2013 To my great surprise (and pleasure) my wife announced the other day that she would like to start playing hockey, or rather, learn how. She is not a big hockey fan (by which I mean, at all) and jealously calls it "my/the mistress". I suppose it's related to our son having just started in the local instructional league, coupled with my obvious obsession. I guess she wants to know what all the fuss is about. So, I hear you wondering, that is all well and good but what is this doing in the equipment forum? Well... for two reasons. The first is that I now have an excuse to buy more gear (although practically none of it will fit me) and secondly, after having bought her a lid, some mitts and a bag, I already have equipment envy. (Note: she has a pair of entry level vapours, v05? that she can use for now. if she gets into it, we'll upgrade those later, but for now she needs everything else). For a bucket, she picked the s19 Z-shock. Partly because it was half off and she loves a good deal, but mostly because it is navy... ok. Anyway, I'm still rocking my five year old s9 and I have to say that this s19 has me green with envy. If only they had a large I would have loved to try one one. I did try on the e700 and it looked like a mushroom on my head. The thing was huge! Is the s19 the same dimensions? the small she got looks great on her and the lightness (and hopefully the protection) just can't be beat.Next we got her these Sherwood N8 gloves that were also half off. They seem really well made and fairly comfortable for being brand new. (these do fit me so I may have to "borrow" them from time to time). Oh, also... navy.Lastly, I got her a s17 wheel bag. I figured there would be no way she'd carry a bag, and besides, it will work nicely for my son as well. Although I love my plain jane canvas bag, these "fancy bag" does have its appeal... although I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would use that zip off back pack. And you guessed it! navy. I guess she likes things to be matchy matchy.Anyway, the adventure begins. Now to sign her up for an intro to hockey skills class...
Chadd 916 Report post Posted January 2, 2013 Your plane jane canvas bag may outlast any of the newer style bags. Fewer features = less to break.

Even though it's underneath everything, the elbow pads HAVE to look good. Doesn't matter if they fit right or not lol. Everything has to match too.Where are you located? mcawesome 1 Report post Posted January 2, 2013 this is funny because i am picky when it comes to actual fashion but hockey equipment i could care less about. wearing a blackhawks shell with a purple jersey is def going to get me on vogue cover haha Ha, my last time on the ice (9 months ago, only 6 weeks to go until I'm able to play!) I got made fun of for having black skates, yellow RBK socks, maroon shell, the blue Stealth girdle, black and orange SDP pros, and blue helmet. They called me the rainbow warrior. Since I saved a ton of money from not playing over the past 9 months, I've bought some new gear, and it's been more color-coordinated: royal blue Bauer shell, royal blue 4-Roll pros, and a matte black E700. Either way, I still look better than 90% of those guys!
Hermans 9 Report post Posted January 3, 2013 True North has a beginner program that is okay or better yet beg, borrow or steal a spot into sparkles (http://www.sparkleshockey.ca/) for a beginner for a much better intro to skills if she wants to do this on her own. Sparkles typically has about 4-6 people per instructor and a genuine love for teaching skills; great group.
