beerleaguecaptain 999 Report post Posted March 9, 2013 Aweful.I think of all the things I've read Chadd's comment on playing the puck and not the man reads most true. It's hard to determine intent here. What is very clear is that the nature of checking in today's game has changed immensely. The purpose of a check is supposed to be to separate a man from the puck, not separate man from his head. In this hit they aren't even on the puck yet, just jostling for position. There was no need to shove them man at that point. Just race to the puck. Ugly.
hunterphfr 12 Report post Posted March 11, 2013 Two years ago, I caught a rut at full speed and went into the boards. Fractured C7, T1 & T5 vertebrae, broke my nose, wrist and some teeth. Nobody touched me, just really bad ice near the zamboini doors. When I first got back on the ice I was a little tentative going into the corners, but it passed. I realized that I could just as easily get injured in a car accident or some other unforseen way. I love the game too much to stop playing, but I just take my foot off the gas a little now.My sister dated a guy in college who's brother years later did the exact same thing. Married with three kids 5 and under, he crushed 3 vertebrae and was paralysed from the chest down. Amazing how something so common can have such devastating and life altering consequences. IniNew 53 Report post Posted March 12, 2013 As many times as I watch this video, I still see Keller as the one initiating the contact trying to catch Schnyder off guard.I think Chadd makes good points, Schnyder was intent on making a hit all along and Keller stops way too far out from the boards. That being said, Keller put himself in a dangerous spot & Schnyder finished his check in a dangerous part of the ice.The outcome is devastating & sad, but if Keller doesn't initiate the contact and takes a check against the boards none of us probably ever finds out theres such a thing as the Swiss B Pro League. With you 100% on this one. When I see what Keller was trying to do, I'm instantly reminded of Backstrom's goal short handed against the NY Rangers a year or so ago.Keller is attempting to neutralize the guy on his back by initiating contact and creating space. His feet doesn't get set, and he gets sent flying. Had he pulled the move closer to boards like Backstrom did in that case, it would have been nearly as dangerous. I don't see any similarities between the two plays except for that they both happen near the boards.
IniNew 53 Report post Posted March 12, 2013 I don't see any similarities between the two plays except for that they both happen near the boards. You don't see how the person nearest the boards notices someone on his back, slams on the breaks and attempts to explode into him to create space? The only difference between the two plays is Backstrom's hit worked out for him.

Backstrom is clearly already set and just pushes back against Anisimov.
IniNew 53 Report post Posted March 12, 2013 I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then.
stick9 892 Report post Posted March 12, 2013 Wow, tragic. Hate to see something like that happen. Schnyder will carry that with him for the rest of his life, maybe more so since they are friends.Keller was way too far away from the boards to do what he was trying to do, and he wasn't braced properly to absorb the hit, evident by how he positions his legs. It's still on Schnyder though. He had him lined up the entire time.
