That he is. Was just in again today. the team has one more game to make it to the city finals. Big game for them tomorrow! Toronto Eagles. He has no idea but we have made arrangements for him to have a skate with a few NHL guys in the summer after his next surgery. He is going to be so shocked.......cant wait to see his face!!!

Great story. Very uplifting, as my 11-year old daughter is going through a tough time at the moment. Nothing as difficult as Alex. Nice to see a kid like him battle and succeed.

Let us know how the game turns out tomorrow. Would love to know.

Some great and sad news to update. Alex's team made it to the West end city finals but got knocked out in the final game.

However we have just been told although he was cleared of his cancer in Jan it has returned now in his lungs. Our thoughts are with his family at this time as he fights on.

Thank you for reading this.

Alexander Shapiro

The Fighting Eagle

Gone Too Soon

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander Shapiro on Friday, April 12, 2013, after a heroic and inspiring battle with cancer.

Alex died peacefully in the arms of his family after almost 12 beautiful, unforgettable years. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his loving parents, Bill Shapiro and Cheryl Madeira, his beloved brother Charlie, and his canine brother Ringo. He will also be missed by his grandparents Olga and Placido Madeira, and Dr. Frank Shapiro. He was loved by his late grandmother Rita Shapiro. He leaves his many aunts and uncles-Heather and Terry, David and Ellen, Lawrence, and Daryl and Mary Kaye; his cousins - Madlyn, Daniel, Simon, Charlotte, Lilith, Basha, Gabriella, Sophia, and Evangelina; and countless friends.

Alex loved life and touched many in his brief time. Alex's great passion was hockey. He played the championship game just two weeks ago and was on the ice for his team's final goal. He leaves an empty seat on the bench, where his coach and teammates will forever feel his loss.

We are eternally thankful for the support of Alex's nanny Bernadette Felicitas and the entire team at Sick Kids.

His funeral will be held at Holy Blossom Temple, 1950 Bathurst Street (south of Eglinton) on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. Shiva will be from April 15th to April 21st, from 11:00 a.m. on, at 384 Beresford Avenue, Toronto.

Donations can be made to the Alexander Shapiro Memorial Fund, c/o the Benjamin Foundation, 3429 Bathurst Street, Toronto, M6A 2C3 (416-780-0324 or www.benjamins.ca).

Thanks for posting that.

I was able to attend the funeral with my work colleagues at the place Alex came to train. It was very nice to hear all the funny stories and listen to some brave friends speak about there team mate. The Coach of Alex's team was fantastic and it was an honour to have known this amazing young man.

Even more of an honor was the team that beat Alex's team for the West City Finals (that went on to win it all) Were all there in attendance today in there jerseys. Very very classy act by the team there parents and the coach.

Gonna miss you Alex.
