bjlasota 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2013 Looking to get a new mouthguard for around $30-$50. I've always used the basic Shock Doctor without any issues. I've narrowed my search down to 2 specific ones, both of which I can get with my Amazon Prime account and at my door before my next game. So, what do you guys suggest are the pro's/Con's of each of these?Shock Doctor 3D Nano vs. SISU 1.6?Thanks.
All Flash 49 Report post Posted March 26, 2013 Don't know enough about the Shock Doctor mouth guard, but am currently using a SISU and would have to say it is the best mouth guard I have ever used. Drinking and talking are non issues.
hunt3rsean 44 Report post Posted March 26, 2013 I've gone through 3 of the SISU mouth guards (when they were called ProTec) and loved them. The reason I went through 3 is because I lost the first 2. So it wasn't an issue of the mouth guard falling apart or anything. My issue is that I have such a bad overbite that other boil and bite mouthguards do not allow me to breath properly. They are either to thick or force my lower jaw forward which causes breathing issues. I went with the ProTec (now SISU) and it completely remedied the problem. Due to the thin material and completely modeable design it worked towards a more custom fit and allowed my lower jaw to sit normally. I took one stick to the mouth (played with a half visor at the time) that hit me in the upper teeth/lower gum region. While the inside of the lip did get cut my teeth/gum were ok. It hurt, but probably wasn't that hard of a hit. So I can't truly say how protective the mouth guard is for the teeth vs another brand. I don't think any boil & bite will truly save your teeth, but something has to be better than nothing. The SISU mouth guard seems very little and lacking but once it's formed and hardened it is very stout. I felt very comfortable and confident wearing it. Now I play with a cage and have gone to not wearing a mouth guard, but if I ever did again it would be a SISU.
bjlasota 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2013 Ordered the SISU yesterday. I only play adult beer league, but have been playing without a mouth guard for 5 years. Reviewed my deductibles for dental work yesterday and decided I'd rather spend 25$ for a guard than whatever my dental visit would cost.
Stewie 721 Report post Posted March 27, 2013 I have and will always wear a mouth guard, as the one time I haven't during my 24 years in hockey I had some teeth shattered. Growing up I always used basic boil and bites, and they worked, but since that incident I've been more keen on higher protection (even though I think I would have been ok with the boil and bite, but it was a lot of impact). That said, I've used both those options, and the SISU is hands down better to me. I went through shock doctors pretty fast, as they broke down on me within a few months, but it was protective and I felt very secure with it on. The SISU (or protech as it was when I bought it) has lasted me a year and a couple of reshapings, and still feels just as protective. It's moldability really helps for my back teeth which have grown at a bit of an angle, it's super comfy to skate in, and talking is relatively unimpeded.
