Best pants for spinal fusion

Recommended Posts

I had spinal fusion surgery on my lower back (L4-S1) last spring. I am now cleared to return to sports but the surgeon wants me to get the best protection for my lower back, coccyx/tailbone, and butt, as I can find. I need protection from falling on my butt or hitting the boards with my lower back, mostly. I am only 37 and not ready to give up on hockey, yet, even though I probably should.

I have an old girdle from years ago, but it is pretty weak in those areas.

What pants and/or girdle would you guys recommend for good protection in those areas? I don't want extreme bulkiness, though, I am only going to play in 30 plus no-check league.

Thanks in advance for any opinions. I really appreciate it.

You aren't going to find a pant that has a lot of protection in the lower back and tailbone areas that are not on the bulky side. You are probably better off going overboard on protection and dealing with the bulk. You many be able to take something like this product and add it to your existing girdle, or even to new mid level pants.

The Evoshield products look good, but I didn't see any that added protection in the tailbone or butt. I will deal with the bulk of high level pants rather than risk getting seriously hurt. Just wondering what you think is the best for that specific area of the body

The Evo-shield product molds to any shape, you could use it anywhere you want. Off the top of my head, Tackla 5000. It has thicker tailbone padding than the 9000 and both come up to cover the lower back pretty well.

I would give the CCM/RBK MHP 520 series pants a try. They are pro-stock, but pretty popular. It has a pretty robust tail bone protector.

Give the APX girdle a look if you don't want bulkiness but the feel of a girdle. It is essentially the APX pant without the pants and it has adjustable thighs. So you get the benefit of a thick tailbone protector and the agility of a traditional girdle around the legs and lower areas.

I actually thought about both the Pro Stock 520 pants and the APX girdle/core pad. Unfortunately, I don't have shops around me with anything but the bare basics. So, I have to look at pictures and descriptions on the websites of the big stores. Then the sizing and feel of the padding is kinda a guessing game.

Thanks for the info guys. Keep the opinions coming.

I've got a crazy idea for you wooderson. What about wearing a girdle/core pad with regular hockey pants over the top? I'd imagine that you would have to size up on the pants, but the doubling of the protection in the posterior region might be worth it. Just another thought.

520s are a solid pant, I had them when they were still a retail model.

Instead of wearing both a girdle and pant, it may make more sense to just bulk up the back and tailbone protection on one or the other. Wearing both woud be way to bulky and inhibit mobility. If he only needs additional protection on the back I would start there.

That's why I suggested the evo-shield product, to bulk up the padding. g-form or Maltese could probably make something as well.

I know Chadd, That was directed more at the pant and girdle idea. Modded pants, or a padded under short appear to be the least restrictive options.

No worries, I didn't take offense at all. I just wanted the OP to know why I suggested that route first.

Well. Thanks for the info guys. Unfortunately, I am now having a lot of nerve pain in my legs and have to go get another MRI on Friday. So, hockey is out for the immediate future anyway.
