Dialing in my stick flex in Bauer TO NXG

Recommended Posts

Not all sticks add the same flex after cutting 3". I'm not familiar with Reebok but maybe you can find a Reebok flex chart and see what it will be after cutting it.

Totally understand that..... which is why I was hesitant to experiment with another brand, only to find out I'm not dialed in again or that I happened to be in between flexes.

Searched but can't seem to find a Reebok flex chart like Bauer has. Nice if I can find a chart but even then it has limited use. In Bauer's case...... Total One 77 does not equal Nexus 77 does not equal APX 77 in terms of flex.

my bauer apx said it right on the stick and easton did it too. maybe ask someone here to look at their stick and see where the flex would be around your needed length.

Went to LHS and Ai9 was indeed 58" for the 75 flex. Cutting 1 inch only brings it to 77 flex but regardless, felt really good at the shooting simulator, both hard and accurate.

CCM RBZ also available at 58", 75 flex. Shooting was hard but not nearly as controlled as the Ai9.

Would like to check out the latest Warrior Dynasty AX1 (not available at this LHS) as it sounds good on paper before committing to the Ai9 though.

Thanks again for everyones help!

I would check out the Warrior AX1. It starts at 63", but the flex is not affected until you cut off about 5". Was using a 77 flex Nexus, so it's stiffer than that for sure. Haven't tried a TO NXG yet, so can't say how it compares to that. Great stick so far, nice pop and nice accuracy, plus great feel. (I cut 4" off my sticks, assuming they are 60")

On a side note, wouldn't mind hearing a comparison of the TO NXG and AX1, just out of curiosity.

I just called Warrior (girl on phone spoke to product manager) regarding AX1:

Available in 70 flex intermediat, 60" - if chop off 3"..... they said "it would be still be like 70 flex, maybe a marginal increase in stiffness" --> too whippy for me

Also, available at 75 flex senior, 63" - if chop off 6", .... they said "would significantly affect flex", couldn't give me a number though

anyone here can give me specific flex # for warrior 75 flex stick, cut from 63" to 57"?

I forget if it was on the AX1 or Covert thread, but the Warrior product manager said that if you take off about 5" the flex is pretty unaffected. I'm not sure if he said it's "completely" the same, but you get the idea. So I don't know what the deal is with the girl you talked to. Of course cutting affects flex, but from my understanding from Keith, the warrior pm, it's minimal on that first 5" or so. As far as a flex number, I think that might even vary from stick to stick, but cutting it down to 56", the 75 flex AX1 feels like it's in the 85-88 neighborhood, whereas the Nexus felt like is was down around 82ish. I think this also has a lot to do with the flex profile, but that's just they way they felt to me.

I just called again and she confirmed that 6" would be "signficant". I will email Keith directly and see if he can give me a flex number at 57". Will report here if I can get an answer.

I totally agree with your assessed flex of the 77 Nexus (i cut mine to 57", whereas yours is 56"). Nexus was too whippy for me (felt like 80ish at 57"), but again that could've been related to flex profile. Didn't feel like getting the 87 Nexus because I prefer a higher kickpoint and keeping the puck down.

Can you confirm that you cut your AX1 by 7" (from 63" to 56") . Thx!

Yep. Cut all my sticks to 56". Although, visually it's weird to be hacking off THAT much when you're used to the 60" length, makes you do a double take before cutting for the first time...

I'm very picky with sticks myself, and have been really pleasantly surprised with the AX1, my favorite stick to date, and I've used pretty much all of them except the TO NXG and Mako 2. Can't imagine it disappointing. It sounds like it might be a touch on the stiff side for you but I think it's as close as you are going to find in retail, and when it breaks in a bit maybe it'll be fine. The other option is to go to the customizer and get a 70 flex, which may be perfect, but that will be AX2 construction. And not sure when those start rolling out. Or go the AI9 hockeymonkey route.

Thx again for confirming. Your feedback on AX1 flex at 56 is very helpful. Dropped by another LHS today which carried the AX1, I think after the cut, it might be a tad stiff in which case I already have that in the TO NXG. Without a demo area/shooting simulator, I wasn't prepared to roll the dice and have another premium stick lying around.

As for the TO NXG, to me its just a more durable version (read stiffer) of the original T0 which for me ended up being a "bad" thing even though I had gone thru half a dozen T1's.The NXG feels more balanced and lighter than AX1 but I could be biased.

For you, 56" would be 92 flex so I would stick with the AX1 since you have found a sweet spot with this line and I believe dialing into the right flex as the overriding factor.

The Ai9 looks like my best bet right now. I may wait for the price to drop since it is at end of product cycle. Will check out customizer AX2/dolomite in the meantime out of curiosity.

If the NXG is anything like the Nexus, then I could definitely see that. The AX1 isn't the best balanced stick, for me, since I cut so much off, but I don't mind it being a bit blade heavy. I guess that is the only fault I can think of so far, but it's not a big deal at all. I might have to try the NXG in a while, you have got me very curious about this stick, not to mention I'm a stick whore... I kept breaking my original 77 flex TO's in the middle, maybe these would be the fix. We'll see if I get tired of the AX1, but for now it's the one.

I can vouch that durability of the NXG is better than the original TO. Gone through this past fall/winter season alternating between 75 intermediate and 77sr NXG without a break..... only blade toe chippiness. Tried not to slapshot too much in practice with the 75 int though, saving it for games lol

Went through two seasons with Supreme One95 without a break. Original TO .... half a dozen sticks in 2 seasons (usually breaking somewhere between the middle and a foot above the blade). Balance/feel of NXG just slightly below Nexus.

Surprisingly I have had a different experience with the NXG. I've seen 4 break within a couple of days, mostly on the first big slap shot.
