t6lock 24 Report post Posted May 2, 2013 http://www.modsquadhockey.com/forums/index.php/topic/61822-do-these-rivets-need-replacingfixing/?hl=%2Bskate+%2Brivetsmy old topic got closed so im gonna make a new oneso it seems that whenever i get my rivets replaced, another one comes loose. i took my skates in to get some replaced to a reputable shop (cyclone taylor) and i know the guy that did my skates has been working there forever so it looks like this now.C=copper, S=steel, R=replacedC C® C® S S S S®C S S S S S Si asked him why he was going to use copper over steel and he said they will hold better and the manufacturer just uses steel to cut down costs. so thats just one skate, and my other skate i had 1 or 2 replaced, but it seems more rivets have come loose now on both skates. i think one of the ones just replaced as well as some new ones. on my old x40's i never had to replace a rivet once after using for more than a year. my holders are oversized because they are pro stock skates and was wondering if that has a big impact on this issue. size 6.5's using a 263 holder
jimmy 194 Report post Posted May 3, 2013 Are you replacing rivets because they are rusting and the crimps are breaking off, or are you replacing them because they are loosening?
t6lock 24 Report post Posted May 3, 2013 they are loosening. id post pics but i am so lazy right now. does anyone else replace rivets often? im thinking if i should maybe just overhaul and replace everything at once
jimmy 194 Report post Posted May 3, 2013 Has to be with the pro stock skates you have. Did they put in different brand/zise holder on them or mess with it by installing lifts or shims, or offsetting? Any of these changes can accelerate loosening, especially if the holes have become enlarged in any way. OEM factory rivets don't usually loosen, they will rust. t6lock 24 Report post Posted May 4, 2013 theres no shims or lifts, the holder is 1 sized up from a normal retail 6.5 skate (254). when i got the skates they were almost brand new. i didnt really have any issues with the rivets for about a year, now for the last few months it seems like one will come loose every few games. JJStripes 1 Report post Posted May 4, 2013 In my experience, once you start having rivet issue, it never ends. You need to either keep an eye on them all the time, or get a new pair of skates.Another thing, I've been told that coppers actually aren't stronger than the the steel ones. They are just good for lining the holder up properly when you start a rivet job, and they weigh more.
jimmy 194 Report post Posted May 4, 2013 True, once a rivet hole is enlarged, new rivets in that hole will continuously loosen. Best to drill virgin hole next to it and instal new rivet in that hole. Coppers are stronger but.... they do not hold the holder in position as well as a steel rivet.
