Skate blades falling out

Recommended Posts

I watched the Washington Capitals game last night and saw Tom Wilson lose a blade from his Bauer skate after a check along the boards. He appeared to hit the heel of the skate fairly hard against the boards and then the blade fell out. I saw another incident in the playoffs this year with another player in the first round. Same type of hit and heel hitting the boards sharply, and then the blade fell out of the holder. Anyone know if this is the new Bauer "Tuuk Edge" holder or just bad luck?

I saw the same hard heel impact against the boards in 2010 with Nick Kronwall of the Red Wings, and he lost his blade. Obviuosly he did not have the new Bauer Tuuk holder in 2010. Is this a somewhat common/recurring problem, or just isolated flukes?

Blades do fall out when they break, which is common with bauers in particular. Breaks can occur on the blade it self but also very common for a chunk of steel to break off the slot where the head of the bolt goes. When this happens, the runner will just drop out.

It's NOT the new LSEdge. In the video you can hear the steel hitting the boards the same time Tim does but before his feet hit boards.. so I'm to believe the steel came out when he left his feet. Could be a broken Tuuk bolt/nut issue, or the force of him trying to turn his body let the steel release from the bolt. Just guessing here.

Only his second NHL game.

He grew up in my neighbourhood. He was told that he would get limited minutes and to go out there and make his presence felt!

Looks like he did!

I had a piece break where the back bolt holds break and the steel just fell out. Quite common.

Yes, that's what I was talking about above. The design of the LS2 holder is poor and it puts a lot of stress at the bolt head. A simple jump over the boards can do it. The new Edge design I think will be much better. Any movement of the blade is not good, causes stress fractures.

The bolt head wears out on me every 2 years. The rubbing as the skate blade moves / flexes seems to do it. Then, during a hard stop or a hard turn, it's out. I should replace the bolts at the start of every season.
