Cosmic 178 Report post Posted May 18, 2013 Does anyone use a hand held skate sharpener, for smoothing out edges while on the bench between shifts? I was looking at Blackstone's theory of how the skate should have the Flat Bottom V; but all of the hand held skate sharpeners are demonstrating how they provide the traditional sharpening. I would like to find a sharpener that can provide deep bottom v's of different cuts.
shoeshine boy 249 Report post Posted May 18, 2013 never heard of one for FBV but I have a Sweet Stick and it is useful when you're REALLY in a pinch for an edge. you'll find that some people will claim that these things don't work. these are usually people that didn't read the instructions so they used them wrong. with the Sweet Stick it takes the correct angle and a VERY light touch. less is more. SCOMPL 14 Report post Posted May 19, 2013 I recommend the A&R Re-Edger. It's under $20, and has a ceramic "V" for fixing edges on your blades and an honing stone on the other end for taking off burrs. It's not a replacement for a skate sharpening, but extends the life of your edge between sharpenings and can fix an edge on the bench.Word of caution, only use the ceramic end for one or two passes in the same direction, unless you have a very deep hollow and like a sharp edge to begin with. I use a 1/2" hollow and my edges feel too sharp after 3 passes.I stay away from anything that claims to be a hand-held sharpener to replace traditional skate sharpenings. I've tried a few in the past and they only ended up destroying my edges.
