Are snapshots better than wristshots?

Recommended Posts

Something I've always been wondering about...

I know snapshots (the snap of the wrist kind, not the mini slapshot) and wristshots are different techniques and the wisdom i've heard is snapshots tend to have more of a surprise release and faster velocity, whereas wristshots are more accurate...

I've been playing for almost 20 years now, and most of the guys who've scored the most or are the highest scorers on my teams are usually guys with ridiculously sick, accurate snapshots. I haven't had a teammate yet who was a scoring leader and a wrister.

I know wristshots have their uses (like when you're off balance probably easier to pull off a wrister than a snap) and I know Joe Sakic had a deadly wristshot...and that's what made him so good. But I just don't feel like snapshots are even that much less accurate. Like watching Ovechkin hit the Russian dressing dolls on youtube...he was using all snaps...

For the most part, would you say the snapshot is the type of shot that would probably score you more goals than wristshots? Are there any other advantages to wristshots that I'm just not seeing?

Thanks!

I would say that hockey has really transitioned to snapshots in the past decade. One of the biggest factors in scoring goals in getting the puck off your stick quickly. IMHO a good snapshot is more useful than a good wrist shot.

Meh, Sakic was more of a snapshot in my opinion.

Then again you can define snapshot a million different ways. What I use is basically my own version, rolling the puck to the toe then flexing (thus closing the blade) upon release to give the puck a nice spin to it. Makes it alot harder to stop in between goalie's leg pads as it's constantly rolling.

It's a situational thing imho. Different times call for different shots.

Agreed on both points. You can call it whatever you want, but varying your release to the situation is important.
