Custom Skate Tongue Help for APX2/NXG

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of getting Custom Skates and I am currently in NXG's. I go tongues out, and use Xtra-stiff inserts which have resulted in bad lace-bite.

The fit of the boot is great and comfortable, but my problem is with the tongue.

If I do go to the APX2 with their newer felt tongue, would I still get good range-of-motion from the tongue? Should I look at a different tongue (felt with insert, x60 (thinner-so not likely)..etc)?

Ultimately, my options are APX2+best performing tongue for ROM and feel during stride or by ordering a separate tongue and have it inserted into my current NXG's. If that is the case what backup tongue would be best for my NXG?

Thanks and I hope this is clear-I appreciate any help/suggestions.

If the NXGs fit you well and don't need replacing, it wouldn't be very cost efficient or practical to buy a completely new pair of skates just for new tongues. I have a pair of custom APX2 with double felt tongues and I love them. I'm a tongues out/flop kind of guy too and I've Never had a problem with lacebite with them.

Well I can have both, and see what works best. The NXG's are not that used yet, so I can order an extra pair of tongues to put in there and see if I like the NXG with say the APX2 Tongue.

My college get's me over half-off on the skates, so I am not spending over 800 retail on new skates.

Also, you have double-felt on your APX2? Why did you go double over the standard tongue it comes with now?

I have the APX2 tongues on my nexus 1000s, I went with black felt so it does not come with the 3 piece standard tongue, more like the double felt thickness like my old Flexlit 4.0 pros... I have no issues with this tongue and it was actually recommended by the bauer rep. I flop a little bit as of recently and I've yet to have any lacebite, but i've also only skated in them 6 times so i'm still breaking them in but no issues so far...

@kakos26 I previously had the APX with the stock tongues on them, and after using them for a few months the tongue started rubbing the front of my shin and made a calcification that's still there (and will probably never go away). So I sent them in and had double felt tongues put on my first APX, and decided I'd just go with the same tongues on my APX2.

Okay thank you! Do any of you both have a picture of the double-felt tongues? I'd like to see what they look like, also any other comments are appreciated!

I do, however the only source of Internet I have being away from home is a wireless hotspot and an iPad which is giving me no option to post a picture. I'll see what I can do when I visit home.

I like the 3Flex tongue (NXG) over white felt with an inch added.

That sound's like a good idea and would that 1" be enough extra for the NXG's. Would you be able to post a picture of them for me? Would my Bauer rep who deals with my College team be able to order me just the tongue alone? I would then try and find a shoe shop to stitch it on for me. (I already ordered a pair of APX's w/Standard tongue)

See my post in this thread for a picture: http://www.modsquadhockey.com/forums/index.php/topic/44935-how-to-order-custom-bauer-skates/page-15

it's not the best photo, but I think you get the idea.

Regarding your plan to switch out the tongues, i'll warn you that I had that done once on a pair of one95s, and I ended up with issues where the toe cap meets the side of the boot. The tongue was stitched on well, but the stitching down the side fell apart.

Yeah I see. Interesting that you had that done on APX2's. What makes that R3flex tongue better than just a standard white felt supreme tongue?

classic supreme tongues are the best IMO

Do you have a picture of the classic supreme's? Or would these just be the standard white felt supreme tongue?

Thank you,

James

I like the 3FLEX tongue because of how it pushes back when you flex forward. It sort of provides balance when you lean forward. I guess what's best about it is how the forward flex is consistent for the life of the skate because I can replace the insert. Also, the padding around the insert is sort of like memory foam, and I like that too. It just feels good.

Oh okay, so would Bauer be able to sell me that separate? I'm sure they can, as my school has an account with them. Was just wondering if you knew from your end. So it's basically my NXG tongue, stitched on top of a white-felt tongue?

Thanks for this site! Wish I had it earlier, but oh well. So do you have a pair of Nexus 1000 tongues on NXG's now?

I don't believe Bauer will sell tongues through consumer channels, but I don't really know. I think your best bet is to speak to whoever deals with Bauer from your school, and perhaps that person will be able to find a way through the local rep. Good luck.
