CCM 852 to Bauer Vapor X60

Recommended Posts

Just got new Bauer Vapor X60's today, replaced my old CCM Tacks 852. Guy at the store said it will take me a few skates to get used to the new pitch because the Bauers put you more on your toes, however I've been reading that the tuuk holders actually put you on your heels?

Anyway I can't skate until my next game on Wednesday, but I want to know what to expect as far as a different skating feel. Can anyone chime in?

Also, how long did it take you guys to adjust to the new feel going from one brand to another?

Having made a similar switch...and having gone through 5 brands in 2 years...it'll take you a shift or two to adjust. What I found most difficult was going from a well-worn old runner with whatever radius to a new steel with a factory radius.

X60. I haven't seen anything with the X: designation, I think you may have meant X 6.0.

I understand that the X60 is a few steps down from the 852, but the next level up (X70) was $150 more, and I couldn't really justify that for playing in a beer league once a week with the occasional sticktime. Plus, I think the 852 was a little too unforgiving for me at my skill level.

EDIT: Ok I looked and apparently Bauer used the X: designation a few generations ago. Mine are definitely NOT X:60.

the X:60 from 2009 is what I mean. that was the top of line skate in the vapor line that year

Going to feel a little different and take a few shifts to get used to. Just remember they are new skates and won't feel exactly like the 852. Don't get discouraged.

Cool, thanks for the responses. A few shifts is a lot better than a few weeks. I'm probably just being paranoid, but the guy at the shop basically made it sound like I'll feel like I'm learning to skate all over again.

Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

So just an update. Skated on them tonight, felt at first like they weren't sharpened, although they were. Couldn't find an edge, sliding all over the place.

After a couple shifts, I found the edges. I think it was probably going from an 11' radius to a 9' radius, along with the more aggressive pitch of the skate.

Fell a couple times, feet hurt a little by the 2nd period, but a couple more skates and I think I'll figure them out. Thanks for the input.

I actually have always liked Tacks. Tried on the new CCM's, and my heel wouldn't lock in. Vapors were the only skates that locked my heel. The 9' radius is taking some serious getting used to, but I feel like once I adapt I'll be more agile overall. Definitely feel slower though.

Have a friend who just changed over from Graf to Bauer Supreme's and felt that he was back on his heels. He eventually had the blades contoured. I have just changed to graf G3's and also had a very strange sensation getting used to the factory contour on the blade but after 3 training sessions they feel great and my brain made the necessary adjustments and I feel like I am skating better and turning tighter.

Just stick with them for a couple of training sessions and after that decide whether to contour or not, Don't have to go the the operating room when you can take a pain killer. !

Good luck with the new skates.
