CBC/Rogers Beat Out TSN For Exclusive NHL Rights

Recommended Posts

News broken by TSN too...wow. Wonder what this means for McKenzie and the gang and what happens to the partnership they had with NHL Network during the draft, trade deadline and free agent frenzy days.

(Wasn't sure if this should be in here or in the NHL Discussions page, if any of the Mods feel it should be in NHL Discussions, they can move it there.)

As an avid hockey fan in the US, I always said I'd love to pay extra to have TSN as an option down here, specifically for the coverage hockey got on it.

Wow...this is the exact opposite than I expected. I figured Bell would go after more hockey...specifically, HNIC and do that on CTV Saturday nights, to compliment all the weekday stuff on TSN. What the hell else do they have on Saturday night?

I am not a fan of anything Sportsnet currently does for NHL coverage. I don't like their studio show...I dont' like their play by play. I hope they hire Miller and Cuthbert away from TSN.

Sportsnet has terrible NHL coverage now. I can only hope they fix that.

As for McKenzie and team, looks like they're going to focus on what they do best - insider news and reporting. He tweeted last night that this isn't the first time TSN didn't hold rights for the games themselves. The TSN guys are still the best in the biz, and I don't see that changing.

Now, what happens to The Hockey Theme? :) I'd love to see TSN give it back to CBC ;)

This deal will be bumping the salary cap by several million next year and as much as $5.5M by the end of the deal over what they have now. All teams will benefit but the Canadian teams will get a higher portion of the increased revenue is what I have read in couple of places.

I assume they will continue to use it. Apparently, there will still be some regional coverage on TSN/RDS. Deals with the Habs & Jets appear intact.

Sportsnet is awful, honestly. Hopefully when they're throwing that much money after the rights, they'll up the quality of their show...but I'm not hopeful.

this is what im kind of was trying to say but not so blatant. Sportsnet is bad for my soul. try watching their coverage for not so fun sports such as cricket

there was an article on tsn about rogers wanting to move some maple leaf games from saturday night to sunday night. I can only begin to imagine the fan backlash that gets thrown at them.

I hope they bring over the announcers from CBC and TSN to call the additional games. Not a big fan of one network pretty much controlling everything you see.
