When to change steel?

I have a pair of Stealth RS skates - i play twice a week. My skates are sharpened roughly every 6 weeks. i've been skating on them for about 14 months now. When should I replace the steel? When I do, any recommendations on what to get?

its purely about how tall your remaining steel is..when it reaches levels of about a half-inch...you should consider replacing in the near future.

Myself and a bunch of team mates use Step velocity steel or Step Black edge, both are a big step up over standard steels. Expensive but worth it. Straight, no rust and hold their edge really well.

I would suggest changing steel when you start to "bottom-out" on sharp turns; when the bottom of the holder makes contact with the ice and you slip.

THIS. I do know some people who like their skates higher/lower than others, but the majority change theirs when they start to bottom out on turns.

Finally changed my steel out and just came back from the first skate on them, wow was I overdue. Went with Step Steel based on the reviews (here, and from a teammate) and I'm glad I did, a huge upgrade in my eyes.

Thanks guys - any recommendations on a new runner/steel setup for my Stealth RSs? I'd like to go with the Step Steel but wondering what runner i should put on there to go with them? I'm a Center, smaller guy, speed and forecheck are big parts of my game. Thanks for the input!
