How do I get used to playing both ice and roller at the same time?

Recommended Posts

Long story short, I switched to ice a few months ago and completely stopped roller skating. My skating on the ice finally got really good (for me) in the past month, and then last week I made the mistake of roller skating for about 3 hours. It took sometime to readjust to roller, but eventually was fine, but when I went on the ice that night, my skating was completely screwed up. It's been 3 sessions since then and I still feel like I've been set back a month.

I think the thing that has been affected the most is where my center of gravity is. For example when I try to skate backwards really fast and try to backwards crossover, I feel like I'm leaning forward too much and I often have to "bail out" of whatever I'm doing. My skating isn't very fluent anymore and I'm constantly dragging a toe out prematurely stopping (which is what I used to do when I started).

So my questions are:

1) what tips do you have for switching back and forth?

2) will it get easier, or will one always a screw up the other?

3) could it have anything to do with how my skates are vs roller blades? I'm using vapor 5.0 on ice and axiom t9 for roller.

4) should I stay off roller blades until my muscle memory remembers how to skate on the ice better (I think my default is still roller), or should I keep trying to do both at the same time to learn how to transition better?

Do both more often. The more frequently you change back and forth, the easier the transition should be.

When going back and forth, spend the entire warm up time stopping. I find that helps significantly. Starts and stops, agility stuff. Then when you get to playing your feet will have already acclimated to whats under them. And yes, the more you do both, the easier the transition gets.

So I've had a while to get readjusted to the ice, and I've noticed more than anything else, my center of gravity is the thing that gets screwed up the most.

Stopping and other stuff isn't as big of a deal, but when sprinting forward, and skating fast backwards, I almost still feel off.

I don't know if it has to do with how my roller skates are set up vs my ice skates, or if it's just that you slow down faster on roller skates, and to balance yourself on roller skates you shift your weight, whereas skates you don't have to do this.

I agree doing both more would help, but if there's anything I can do that's specific to this problem I'm willing to try it.

I was having trouble with this myself , so I converted a pair of my ice skates to roller blades and when I set my chassis up I set them back a little further back then what the stock roller blades were (mission t-9 skates ) so now I have put that chassis on my bauer one 90 boot i also went with to 80mm wheels in the back and two 72mm wheels in the front it gave a slight rocker and for my self i feel the balance point feels the same as my ice skates , so far it has helped me

I used to have issues switching as well. The only thing I found that helped is what was said above. Just keep doing both. Now, I have no problem transitioning and do it without thinking. Hopefully you will find that happen soon as you keep at it.
