Trouble Matching New Stick to Old Nike Bauer One.9 or Total One

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas,

Looking for help on new sticks. Many years ago - guessing like 2008-2009, I picked up a Nike Bauer 0ne90. The top model at the time. By far, my favorite stick ever. Lasted a year or two before the toe gave and I replaced it with a Total One. The Total One was also an excellent stick, and gave me some amazing wrist shots. There was something about the snap it had. Hard to explain but I could feel the stick load and snap moreso than others I have owned.

Now - I have a Total One NXG LE Vintage. Similar to this but non-grip. http://www.hockeygiant.com/bnxle2stkgsrred.html

For whatever reason, it doesn't feel the same as my previous Total One. Excellent stick, but not my favorite. Same lie, flex, curve, etc. I am mostly a finesse player looking for feel and wrist shots with a mid kick. Never take slap shots - despite reading that's the design of the Total One series sticks. I tried the APX2 last year and hated it. For whatever reason, I couldn't get any power behind my wrist shots with it.

Any recommendation on sticks to try now that might feel similar to the Nike Bauer one.9 of years past? I am not brand loyal to Bauer by any means - I just buy them because I don't have the money to try new high end sticks all day long.

Thanks!

Jim

I think the "old" stick you are referencing is the One90. That was the top-end Supreme stick back in 07-08'ish. It was followed by the One95, TotalOne, TotalOne NXG and now the MX3.

Obviously every 18 months or so, they release a new one and the MX3 was just released 2 months ago.

The only recent Bauer stick that somewhat resembles the technology from the old One90 and One95 days is Supreme One.9. This was released about a year and a half-ago as the second price option down from the TotalOne NXG. The blade foams and carbon come very close to the Supreme One95 that everyone loved. The shaft was a bit different as the One95 was a fused design and the One.9 used monocomp technology. There were a few other subtle difference - but the big thing people loved about the One95 was the puck feel. 3K carbon fiber used in the blade combined with similar foams closely replicated the One95 feel.

If you can find one in your desired flex and pattern, you may want to give it a try. They are now on closeout, so they can be found for a decent price.

Thanks! Yeah - The One90 was the stick, you are right. I'll hunt around.

Any other brands out there with similar feel? I would love to try something else, just scared to hate it and have to sell used for half of what I bought it for a week later.

The only One90 I owned was a pro stock, but I did have a few One95's. I am afraid that nothing I have used recently replicated the One95 feel. I did not buy a One.9 since it was not available with Griptac finish - but others have reported they liked it.

In my opinion - the only other sticks that had the blade feel that came close to the One95 was the Warrior Dolomite from around 2011 and the Easton SE16 (as old as the One95!). Those sticks were all noted for going "soft" very fast. Now days, people want their sticks to last, so the composites, foams and resins are engineered for a stick that feels new for a longer period of time. The sacrifice is feel.

Makes sense. Oddly enough, I like my sticks more and more as they go soft. For whatever reason my wrist shot feel and velocity improves as my sticks age. The issue I have now is my Total One NXG hasn't gone soft. It still feels like the stick I bought new...

I may be way off base here, but I have a hard time believing that if someone gave you a couple new sticks without paint jobs, you would have a hard time picking out this "magic" stick you describe if the one90 was in their with a bunch.

yes between brands and patterns and flexes there are differences. But between the same company my total one, nxg, mx3 I have used I would not be able to tell the difference if they weren't painted and between the x60, apx, apx2 I have used I could hardly tell the difference in my stick. always a backstrom curve 102 flex grip. across the board.

This puck feel thing is way fabricated. we aren't pros.

I don't like changing my equipment like pants or skates as the feel on your body is way different. But I bet if someone handed you a blacked out stick you would be very hard pressed to say what it was. its in your head mate.

grab a new bauer and withing 20 minutes on the ice your gonna like it.

I used to love the One90 back in the day and have become a huge fan of the Warrior Dynasty AX1/AX2 sticks more recently. Mid-kick, super soft puck feel, and good snap. They've also been tanks for me as well.

Speaking as someone who has gone the One90-One95-Total One-Total One NXG route I can tell you that there are feel differences between the Total One and the NXG and even a more drastic difference between the One95 and NXG. Am I a pro? Far from it but I can feel the difference.

Not to be a dick... but yes, way off base. I will agree - if you gave me a handful of sticks, I could not pick the brand. But, I could distinguish between feel, shot velocity, ease of use, weight, etc. Further - give me an APX with a low kick point and a Total One with a mid... definitely tell the difference. I did grab a new Bauer last year... the APX2, and hated it.

There is a reason so many people loved the One90... and its not a completely coincidental, make believe reason.

Pure Hockey does it all the time in their video series right? Yes, people do get the brands wrong, but they always state one felt better than the rest for them.

I need to find a place, like one of the big online retailers actual storefronts, to try some out. After hating the APX2 and selling it at such a loss, I am scared to stray from the Bauer Total One sticks.

Appreciate the input! I will check out the Warrior Dynasty.

The solution sounds like you need to start out with a softer flex from the beginning.

I currently buy 77, but then cut a few inches off, bringing to probably closer to 85-90. Maybe I need to leave it full length for a few games and see if I can get used to the length!

Thanks,

Jim
