Skate with best heel/ankle lock

Recommended Posts

One of the first ice skates I used that had exceptional heel and ankle lock was the Easton S15's, and ever since then every ice skate I've considered had to fit in that respect. I don't think I've ever had an inline skate that met this requirement. The last three pairs I had were a pair of bauers, I forget the name but they were like $200 new and they were awful. Reebok pumps 9k's, I actually liked them a lot they just broke down fairly quick. Now I just recently got a pair of the Alkali RPD shifts. I took a chance and bought them online, perfect size they just don't fit my foot in the right way and there's virtually no heel or ankle lock.

All that being said, I'll probably sell them to someone in my league. What skates do you guys have experience with that really lock your heel and ankle in? All price ranges, that's not really a factor, I just want a skate that's going to fit the right way. It's tough for me to get to a store and try them on as there really aren't any stores that carry inline skates near me. Also prefer a stiffer skate, my ice skates are Bauer Supreme NXG's and I love them. When I was younger I pretty much used missions exclusively and I really loved them until one year I had a high end pair that just didn't do it for me and I since decided to try some others. Any feedback is appreciated.

If you can find them, CCM U+ skates have given me a good experience with heel and ankle lock. The JetSpeed are also advertised to be pretty tight in back, but I'll be able to give in person experience hopefully tomorrow when I sell my old pair(s) of skates and try some new ones on.

If not, see if you can find some S15's used online. I used them last year, and loved the ankle lock. Felt like it gave me more speed.  The only downside was the Tuuk SS runners, and the one time I was a big stupid idiot and wore low cut socks. Now my left ankle is shredded with scabs.

Top end Bauers (X60r, Premiers, APX, APX2, 1XR) are the stiffest and have got good lock if they fit your foot. Like you, my SE16's were the best fitting heel lock boot I have ever had, I used to get a suction noise like pulling your feet out of mud when I took those off. I have been in every top end inline boot (except the new CCM range) and nothing comes even close to the Easton. If money is no object consider the VH route with an inline frame and extra stiffness added thru the rear quarter, VH will do this and the advantage here is they will add some additional strength thru the sole to support the inline frame as opposed to a straight ice conversion. Now you have a boot that will fit your perfectly. Or find an ice boot you like and get it converted.
