new CCM McDavid pattern lie?

Recommended Posts

When new patterns come along, they tend to just die out quickly. Look at all the particular curves Warrior has put into production only to be killed a short while after. Meantime, E28's the new bread-and-butter everyone's got to use, so it's just a matter of a brand losing out on sales for not having it in their lineup on the rack.

I think that E28-like curves are here to stay. Kids are being taught to shoot from the toe in order to get the puck off quicker. This was the reason for the mass extinction of the heel curve.

We received our stock of CCM sticks, so I will post a curve comparison if I can get to the shop tomorrow/Friday. I will line it up with the Giroux, the E28 and the TC3.

It's great that kids are being taught how to shoot properly, but this should be the case for them dealing with the puck on any and every particular part of their blades.

I just don't get why the E28 gets such special consideration. Heel curves are perfectly fine for shooting off the toe, just as E28's are perfectly fine for shooting heel-to-toe, as well as backhand. They both have different built-in strengths that must be accounted for (practice), but nothing that makes one or the other technique impossible, just slightly different about when and where to apply the pressure.

In my mind, the E28 is also a heel curve, just one with a combo curve at the toe, similar to how its "dual rocker" was promoted. The heel portion of the E28's curve is significant enough that it could almost rival the classic Drury if the toe were made straight again. It's just that it's such a nice toe curve that that's what gets focused on, but the E28's not just that, not only a toe curve. That's the beauty of it I think, but it gets little appreciation or notice.

Forgot/Edit: The Warrior curves I had in mind were as many toe curves as heels or mids: the Smyth, Gionta, Chara (maybe a mid-toe, but close to the E28 in conception), probably Pacioretty soon. There have been mids and toes retired by Warrior as well, but a significant amount of toe curves compared to the total that have been available at retail over the last 20-years.

Update:

After looking more closely at the McDavid curve, it is slightly different than the True TC4 pattern. If you look at the heel of the McDavid curve, the bottom of the blade looks like a portion is "notched" out as compared to the TC4. I'll try to take a picture tomorrow. The TC4 is a smooth rocker from heel to toe, and the P28 starts at the heel, has about a 1" notch, and then has a smooth rocker from that point to the Toe.
