Top eyelet left undone - More skate wear?

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone has run into this problem?

I've switched to undoing my top eyelet, and since, I've noticed a significant increase in wear on my skates, particularly the interior lining around the top eyelet and the skate tongue/felt.  It makes sense in some regards, since with the top eyelet being undone, that there is naturally more excessive movement.  Thoughts?

Possible but not the only factor in my opinion. I think it depends more on how you like to tie your skates and what type of skate your are talking about.

I wear CCM Tacks (top tier).  When I tie to the top eyelet, I tie relatively tight to 2nd eyelet and then leave top eyelet tied pretty loose.  If I leave the top eyelet undone, I tend to tie very tight to the 2nd eyelet.  I wear shins over tongues.  Use wax laces and wear very thin socks (liners).  I notice most of the wear on my outside edge tongues and felt - stitching coming slightly lose and felt deteriorating.  The boots are 2 years old - use them about twice a week.  Notice wear, but noticed the wear happening more rapidly once I dropped down an eyelet.

I've been doing this for years and never noticed any more wear than normal in those areas.

I wear my shin pads over the tongue, if your shin pads are under the tongue that could be why.

Just a shot in the dark it might be the skates in my opinion. First off in general when u have a top tier skate you always sacrafice durability for performance, and second again just my opinion CCM has had a ruff track record in my experience when it comes to durability.

Not too sure about top of the line skate and durability, I always found that top of the line breaks down / gets softer much slower that its lower end counter part. It also makes perfect sense to me that you see more wear, more movement inside the top of the boot = more friction and wear. Your foot moves more inside the boot, as opposed to ''with the boot'' if you had the top eyelet done, if that makes any sense.
