Curve Question: P88 and E28

Recommended Posts

I really enjoyed this discussion gentlemen. Flip12, Cavs019, Colins, dkmiller3356, you brought some interesting points and observations. In the pics you posted colins,  it appears that the True and the Sherwood have very similar lies when placed beside the Warrior stick. Good comparison.

The Sherwood PP77 and True MC are pretty close in lie. The heel/hosel is different between the two, but if you line up the rocker (neither has much of a rocker - pretty flat bottom on both) and tape them together, the 5.5 lie Sherwood is just slightly 'lower' than the 5 lie True:

I just went and compared the PP77 to a few other curves I have here like the Easton E3, CCM P19, CCM P29, Bauer P92 and Sherwood PP26.

The PP77 is likely the lowest true lie of any stick I have and has to be one of the lowest lies on the market at retail these days. If you tend to skate with a deep knee bend, but don't like having to cut your stick super short to keep most of the blade on the ice when stick handling, it's a beauty.

Just played my 2nd night with the X28 after having used the X88 for the past year and a half or so. With the X28, I seem to have to concentrate a bit more when receiving passes, but it is working. My shot is different with the X28 for sure. It is more of a "pull and fling" as someone mentioned earlier, and since the puck sits in the pocket more toward the toe when I start to shoot, it has less distance to travel to get to the end of the toe on my wrist shots/ toe shot flings, so it seems like less time for the goalie to track the puck before it is in the air. Does this matter? Maybe not. You'd have to ask a goalie I guess.

Also, as someone in this forum pointed out when I started a similar thread curve, because the X28 has an open toe, and a unique area (the dual lie) that allows for puck cupping, my hands (especially my top hand) are naturally coming out in front now, as the shot is being lined up. This is new, I used to kind of alligator arm my wrist shots, and could not figure out why it felt so unnatural to shoot in a manner that I was being advised was "properly" (ands out in front). With my hands out in front now with the 28, I feel like this lets me get my top hand into the shot a bit more, which I appreciate because I feel like I was muscling shots with my lower hand with the X88, and it did not feel right.

As others have mentioned, there are definite tradeoffs- harder to get things done on the backhand with the X28, but since most of my shots seem to be mid range wristers (and I so rarely scored on the backhand anyway with the 88), I can "sacrifice" this aspect, to get into a curve (X28) that forced me into a healthier shot motion that will relieve strain in my bottom elbow in the long run, I think.

As someone mentioned, if you have been using the same curve for 23 years and are comfortable in it, then no sense changing. However, if you are new and need a bit of a newb curve (as I did when I first got started a couple years ago), then I think the 88 is a nice, easy curve to use. It was just by chance that I fired a few shots with the 28 at the range, while wanting to try out a stick that I felt it and thought, "Wow, this is nice." I did not expect it to translate to ice so I hesitated 6 months before giving it a shot. Pleased that I did.

Well done sir, you have demonstrated and explained why I like the Sherwood so much, particularly the PP77.  I'm not that short (5-11), but I skate low to the ice and it is a beauty for stick handling and shooting for me.

That would be the exact opposite of me, then.

Thinking about buying one. I just ordered a CCM RibCor Reckoner Stick, 85 flex and p46 (Bergeron curve).

Ok. The P46 is a little wack, but enjoy. I've been trying to figure out what the P14 is. It's the depth of the PM9 and the curve of the E28. Any good for wristers?

What do you mean by "the p46 is a little wack"? Sorry for the dumb question. On an other note, check out these links, maybe  they can help. I have them bookmarked for quick reference because these are the stick manufacturers I prefer.

I've got one on a 30 dollar RibCor. Prepare to sacrifice your backhand for some insane spin on your shot if you place your bottom hand far enough, but YMMV.

I also just looked at the P14 on the HM webpage. Nooooooooope.
