Skate sizing (Supreme vs Jetspeed)

Recommended Posts

My local pro shop doesn't have adult sized skates so I don't have much help here locally on figuring out skate sizing.  I have a pair of old Mission Boss inlines in 12EE and they fit pretty perfect.  I picked up a pair of last years Supreme 180s in 11EE.  After wearing them a few skates I've realized they're at least a half size too big and definitely too wide in the heel, but the width in the forefoot seems fine.  I started using some Ezee fit booties and that's helped with the heel slip and eliminated the blister I was getting on my inner left heel.  They BARELY fail the pencil test on the 4th eyelet but are good on the 3rd.

In sneakers I usually wear a 13, but dress shoes are typically a 12.

I'm looking at some of last years model of Jetspeed, and thinking a 10.0EE.  Am I on the right track or out in left field?

On paper, Ribcores seem like they'd actually be perfect if they had more volume.

It depends on how far out you are on the 180's. Jetspeeds (prior to FT1) fit a 1/2 size down from Bauer, if you were an 11 in Bauer you would get a 10.5 in a Jetspeed. A guide to the sizing in your 180's is: pull the laces out, pull the tongue out, slide your foot into the boot and push forward until the toes are feathering the toe cap. If you can slide a pencil down the back of your heel then the boot is at least half a size too big, if you can slide a finger down there then you are at least 1 size too big. But Boss fitted 1 1/2 sizes larger than everyone else so it sounds like you are a 10 1/2 in Bauer which means you would be a 10 in a Jetspeed.

That's exactly what I needed.  Were tacks the same sizing as the jet speeds at the time or were they 1/2 smaller?

Super tacks are the same as Bauer sizing, tacks are the same as Jetspeed. Here is a post from a ccm rep, BelangerJS, about CCM sizing which will help you with any other questions about them.

Coming from a pair of NikeBauer Flexlite 18s in 6.0, I just bought a pair of Jetspeeds in 6.0 and my toes don't quite reach the toe cap inside the Jetspeeds.

I'm typically 8.5 in sneakers and 8.0 in dress shoes.

So I got a couple pair in to try and I'm now struggling with the pencil test/volume on the Jetspeeds.

Jetspeed 300s in 10d and 10ee both feel great.  The Ds are a little more on the snug side but not uncomfortable, the EEs feel great too.  My toe feathers the toe cap standing flat footed, put a bend in my knee and it comes off it just a hair.  I love the heel lock on these, it's unreal.  The problem is I definitely fail the pencil test.  I fail it a little bit in my Supreme 180s in 11EE as well, but not quite as bad.  If I squeeze in the boot (like it would be if I had the skate laced up) it does get a bit better, but I'd still fail.

The Tacks 4052 doesn't really feel a whole lot different on my foot other than the seam between the toecap and the boot seems botched and sticks into my toe.  The pencil test is a little better, but not a ton.  Overall the jet speeds feel better, but I'm going to be getting some wicked lace bit down the line, yeah?  It seems like signs would point to a nexus, but if the supremes in EE are too wide and the heel is way too loose, won't it be in the nexus as well?

It couldn't hurt to try on some Nexus skates in a D.  The Nexus D will have a narrower heel than a Supreme EE.  They just won't be as wide as the Supreme EE.  Bauers retail sizing is a little different than other manufacturers.  So, for example, a Supreme D width is really an E width forefoot and an A heel and a Supreme EE is really an EEE width forefoot with a B heel.  Nexus D is really EE with an A heel and a Nexus EE is really an EEEE with a B Heel.  Hope that makes sense.

Unfortunately that is the nature of retail skates today, unless you go custom then getting a deep volume skate with a narrow heel fit is next to impossible. If you like the fit of the skates but the volume isn't enough, the volume can be dealt with in other ways. Eyelet extenders, alternate lacing, skip eyelets, no laces, option B, tongue change, lace bite pads, forsberg pads are the main options that people use and get long term success with.

Is there a current skate that fits similar or uses the same last as my old Mission Syndicate Boss skates in a 12EE?  They really do fit perfect!

I wore the skates around the house a bit more yesterday afternoon and figured out the Tacks just aren't very comfortable after wearing them a bit.  There seems like theres too much pressure in the midfoot area, which seems a little odd as a i have a medium high arch.

The jetspeeds actually get a bit more comfortable after wearing them (these are both 290s).  The 10EE is pretty close to perfect but the toe cap seems just a little tight on my pinky toes.  The 10.5D is more comfortable but a little tight in the forefoot.  with the skate tied up to about the 4th eyelet down, it acutally just about passes the pencil test fine in both sizes. In the 10.5d I don't quite brush the toe cap standing up straight, but it's close.  The only thing I'm worried about with stepping up to a 10.5EE in the jetspeeds is losing the heel lock.  I'm thinking about ordering a pair of the new tacks and seeing how that fit compares as well as a nexus.  I'm really wanting to get on a new pair of skates, but I know i need to take my time to find something that fits right, as i'll probably have these until they're completely shot.
