Skate Fitment Help Jetspeed, Vapor, Supreme

Recommended Posts

Ive read lots of good info here recently, and this is my first post.

Just getting back into skating and rec hockey after 10-15 year break, and getting my 5-6 year old boys started also.

My old air 90 skates are just old. I wear a 12 shoe normally, and here is what I tried so far.

Jetspeed FT360 --10 EE fit pretty good snug/tight everywhere evenly it seemed. Seem very snug, not sure if they will loosen up a little.

Bauer Vapor X500 --10.5 D- fit good but a little less even pressure in several spots like toebox width, not too bad really, but ankle fit is WAY too tight.

I tried a X700 --10D, fit worse in every way.

Tried the X500 -- 10.5 EE Too wide for my foot,  was mildly comfortable but seemed too loose in width.

Im going to try a Bauer Supreme (160 or 170?) in a 10.5 D later today at a shop an hour away. Would these be a decent fit based on the results above? They are new and on clearance for $50. That would save some money for the kids gear also, but I want something that fits right.

The jetspeed felt pretty good and evenly snug all around, I just wonder if its too snug. The older guy helping me at the store seemed to like the fit in those, hes been doing this a while, but didnt have the Supreme to compare. He thought they would be worth trying but liked the Jetspeeds over the Vapors I tried.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

The Vapor line has a narrow heel and shallow depth. The Nexus has a wider heel and much more depth. The Supreme is in between. An online search will find lots of guides to fitting skates. Make sure the heel is locked, the toes just brush the end, there is a little room at the back but not too much (the pencil test) and when unlaced you can place a pencil across a couple of eyelets down without it touching the foot. As I understand it baking can help a skate expand but not shrink.

It sounds like the Jetspeeds in 10EE were a great fit. Snug all around with as little negative space as possible without any serious pressure points is exactly what you want. Baking will help them form to your feet as will breaking them in.

Yes, it should loosen up slightly after baking and break in. Skates will only get bigger and never smaller. You can bake, stretch and punch them if needed. What you don't want to do is get skates that have a lot of negative space as you'll lose energy transfer and they can also potentially lead to blisters and even bone spurs.

Also, lengthwise the current Jetspeeds and Bauer skates should be similar. If the 10EE Jetspeeds were the right length then you should also try on 10EE Vapor skates and 10D Supremes. You could also try on 10D in the current Tacks line and a 10EE in the Ribcore line.

Agree with all the above comments and would also add that after a 15 year break, you will notice a big difference in terms of lack of forward flex offered in the new style hard shell skates. Its an important consideration as it will impact your skating technique.

I got the size wrong in my first post. The ee I tried in the vapor was a 10 re. It was too loose.

I bought the 10.5d supreme 160 for now since they were so cheap. It will get me skating with my kids for now again, but still a bit tight in the ankle I was surprised.

I tried some tacks 6092s in a 10d and they were good, other than 2 small tight spots to adjust.

I keep thinking about the ft360 jetspeed 10ee. They fit like they were shrink wrapped on my foot. The more I read, thats what you want right? Very snug and even pressure?

Does anyone know if the older model jetspeed fit the same, like the 280 290 300? All the new models are different number names. Not sure which model is the best value for me, but old models are on sale, and I don't care about current year unless they fit best.

Maybe. I used to tie real tight up top and even add tape since I liked very little forward flex.

Anyone know if my old bauer air 70 and 90 had a higher heel like I was told the jetspeed has? I didn't know skates had different pitch now.

If you're a 10 in the Vapors and current Jetspeeds then you should be a 10 in the Supremes as well. So while you can skate in the 10.5, they are probably a half size long and you might experience some movement after they're broken in.

Yes, shrink wrapped to your foot is what you want. The older Jetspeeds had a similar fit profile, but were sized a half size larger. Meaning, if you fit a 10EE in the current line, you would be a 9.5EE in the old line.

OK Im getting somewhere at least, trying on skates.

The new and old CCM Jetspeeds seems to fit the similar to me, at least the FT360 and 300 I tried. Id like to find the lowest model Jetspeed from last year that retains most of the stiffness. Not sure what model that is.

I would descibe the jetspeeds as a snug or athletic fit.

I wore my 10.5 D  Supremes for 20 mins around the house and I was wrong.. The ankle pain Ive been describing is actually just below the ankle bone. Is that the Bauer bite? Does that go away or no?

Otherwise Id call these supremes a comfortable fit vs the jetspeed athletic/performance fit (on my feet anyway).

I can already tell I may wind up with a few sets, and sell the ones that dont fit as well.
