OPS/Shaft & Blade Vs Good Ol' Wood

Recommended Posts

A question for all you guys who just play Roller.

Which sticks do you prefer? OPS/Shaft & Blade OR A nice chunk of a Canadian Tree?

Let us know why you like what you like.

I like the weight and consistency of the OPS but....... the feel and the fun you have tinkering with your wood (hahaha!!?!?!)

I've noticed a lot of guys in the league we play in seem to be going back to the wood sticks because of the feel.

I think woodies should be banned in our league! For the simple fact that one broke in the game before ours tonight and there was shards of wood/fiberglass all over the rink. Its such a pain in the ass when one snaps like that and refs spend 15 mins trying to clean the crap off the rink.

Im using a shaft/blade combo ATM. Novius reg, 300 flex shaft with a Koho, Jagr, Combo blade. Can't remember the exact model but it has a yellow centre.

Gotta say how stoked I am with this setups ATM as I haven't gone a game in 2 months without scoring plus 2 points and at least one a goal. The bloody thing rocks like no shaft has rocked before.

We play on a massive number of different surfaces, and some of them are really, really hard on wood blades. There's one floor that's essentially like sandpaper (one shift and it'd gone through one layer of new tape), and we always hate playing there! It just shaves the bottom of your blade down to nothing....

I'm currently using a tapered M-1 shaft with an Easton hybrid Synthesis blade in it, and I'm loving it so far. It's a bit shorter than normal, as I haven't bought a longer plug for it yet, but I'm thinking of leaving it as it is. I usually play with a stick that comes up to my chin with skates on, but the M-1 only comes up to my adam's apple. It's a bit of an adjustment, but I like it so far. The shaft itself is great, too :)

I used to use wood, then I got some cheap shafts. I prefer the versatility of changing blades, and the fact that slashes don't take chunks out of composite shafts....Not used any OPS yet, 'cause I don't have the cash...but I'm good with shafts/blades just now :)

Playing about 80-20 on cement floors wood blades or sticks were lasting me 2 skates tops. After a bit of Juggling with sticks I'll be using Vectors to start the season and backing them up with a shaft/blade combo, with either a Sherwood Axion or Koho (not sure of the name) ABS at the bottom.

I go back and forth between composite tapered 2 piece, ops, and standard shaft/wood blade.

I honestly get as good a shot with all of them, the only thing I can get better with the non-woodies is a quicker snap shot, and it's not really noticable to anyone but me.

I play roller only (once in a blue moon on ice), on Sportcourt or equivalent. I prefer to use either a OPS or a composite shaft/composite blade combo. Main reason simply being that I have a better feel for the lightweight plastic puck with a lightweight stick. But it has been a looooooong time since I've used a wood stick for roller so I may have to go try it again sometime just for $hits and grins. Maybe I'll like it and save several hundred dollars a year.

On the other hand, the few times I play ice I'll go with a wood stick or a composite shaft/wood blade combo.
