You can not compare Kovalev to Lemieux. Not on any stand point. Ask anyone, any real fan, when we are talking about the best players, Kovalev does not fit in. Think about all the great players, Gretzky, Lemieux, Sakic, Yzerman, etc.- consistant. It counts, and Kovalev doesn't have it. Lately teams rely on the offense he doesn't produce.

Oh yes you can! ;) If it all about stats, results etc- then why on Earth do you WATCH hockey at all??? Just read your newspaper sports page - the part where all the results, stats and team standings are haha :D <_<

Hahaha, that's very true...Players like Kovalev makes me love the game. :D Not to add Datsyuk or Fedorov, lol.

I prefer players that give everything they have every night.

Exactly, I love watching hockey like that. Like the Leafs playoffs, they never win,( :( ) but try their best every night. Roberts, Domi, Tucker, Sundin, they have all played hurt in the last couple years. Kovalev wouldn't dream of it, he dives all the time too. I honestly don't understand what you guys see in Kovalev now. He's a hack,(not saying he always was)who does a nice move every 5 games.

And those that don't mistake hockey for acting.......................

However I am guilty as well. I'm a big big kovalev fan, but after seeing him take that dive against the bruins last season and losing the game..............it's like seeing a parent do drugs or something, not that I would know haha.

But whatever, we all make mistakes........he's got great physical talents.

Anyone ever read The NHL Scouting Report by Sherry Ross?

The last edition I have is from '96-'97 and her assessment of Kovalev was as follows...........

THE FINESSE GAME:

"You don't often see hands as quick as Kovalev'son a player of his size. He has the dexterity, puck control skills, strength, balance and speed to beat the first forechecker coming out of the zone or the first line of defense once he crosses the attacking blue line. He gets into trouble, though, when it comes down to what should be done after those men are beaten. Kovalev's decision making process seems to be a beat off. He will be looking to pass, then decide it's best to shoot - but by then, he is in too deep or is at a bad angle for the shot.

There are too many occasions when the slithery moves don't do enough offensive damage. Sometimes he overhandles, then turns the puck over. Other time, too many times, he fails to get the puck deep. He hates to surrender the puck even when dump and chase is the smartest option, and as aresult he causes turnovers at the blue line.

He is one of the few players in the NHL agile and balanced enough to duck under a check at the sideboards and maintain possession of the puck. Exceptional hands allow him to make remarkable moves, but he doesn't always finish them off well."

THE PHYSICAL GAME:

"Kovalev is sneaky dirty. He will run goalies and try to make it look as if he was pushed in by a defender. He's so strong and balanced on his skates that when he goes down odds are it's a dive. Kovalev has a well deserved reputation among NHL referees as a whiner who feigns injuries, which is probably another reason he mertis little respect among his NHL peers. The chippier the game, the happier Kovalev is; he'll bring his stick up and wade into the fray.

Kovalev has very good size and is a willing hitter. He like to make highlight reel hits that splatter people. Because he is such a strong hitter, he is very hard to knock down, unless he is leaning. Kovalev makes extensive use of his edges, because he combines balance and a long reach to keep the puck well away from his body, and from a defenders. But there are moments when he seemst at a 45 degree angle and then he can be nudged over.

He thrives on extra ice time and has to be dragged off the ice to make a line change."

THE INTANGIBLES:

"The Rangers have finally had enough of Kovalev's inconsistency and immaturity, and if the right trade comes along, he will take his showy skills elswhere. There is a chance the Russian will blossom in the right situation, as Petr Nedved did after the Ranger traded him to Pittsburgh last season, but four years of waiting is apparently enough for Kovalev's biggest booster, GM Neil Smith, who drafted him in 1991"

ATTN: Kovy Ribs........or anybody else..............know what length shaft he uses? The report I posted said he uses a long reach, but from what I've seen, it looks as if he uses a very, very short stick.

hey man...every 5 games, divided by 82 games in a regular season, is more than 16 highlight reel calibre moves. No, I'm not a kovalev stalker, but hey, I give credit when credit is due. Kovalev is an amazing stickhandler, no doubt about that, but hockey isn't played 1 on 1.

Why don't you guys give it a rest already. The fact is, Kovalev is one of the most skilled players in the game today. Probably ever. His stickhandling and skating are mesmerizing. However, we all know he has some downsides too. Last years playoffs showed both the highs and the lows. If we are just talking about skills though, he is right up there with the best of all time IMO.

Question for any of you Kovy lovers out there... Does anyone have a video of the move that he pulled against the US in the World Cup this past summer? Or any vids of him for that matter?

Kovy- you would have loved it. My mom's friend is sponsoring a Russian girl to live here for a year. I just took her up to a WHL game tonight and we talked hockey the whole time. She loves Kovy, not as much as Krisokrasov, though.

Nice post ;)

I've got a clip of his goal from the world cup, can e-mail (edit: unfortunately my web mail cannot attach file that big, could send it through Windows Messenger perhaps...)to you. PM me your adress. Also have a couple of his goals from his time with the penguins...

If only I was given total access to the NHL archive... what compilations would i have made... B) (and yes, Kovalev would be one of its stars for sure :D ) i wish, i wish... (sigh)

edit: use Altavista search engine for video (key word Kovalev) and it'll come up with 10-15 clips.

Damn, why do I always focus on the wrong parts of posts? I may need to investigate this "sponsoring" thing.
