Powerfly holder steel

Recommended Posts

Are people mainly using the Bauer steel (Fly Ti and Fly X) for the new Powerfly holders or are they using other steel (JRZ, Tydan etc)?

There appears to be questions regarding the durability of the Bauer Fly steel.  Unsure if this is actually true.

Are people liking the new Powerfly holders?

I use jrz. I've used fly ti too and had no issues with durability. But with that said I'm using it on the edge holders so not sure if the combination of fly ti and fly holder causes more breakage for whatever reason.

Reviving this thread. I took advantage of the current discounts on older version of Vapor skates.

Current skates are the 2023 Vapor X4 -still in good shape- but no matter what I pulled the trigger on the 2023 Vapor X5 Pro as they were discounted (about $650cad with Fly X). I feel so great in size 9 fit 1 that could not resist to buy the X5s.

I just realized Fly X runners have super bad reviews on the interwebs. Lots of cases where they just broke in 2 parts, inside and outside period of warranty. Consensus seems: they suck. So I may be in the market for better runners even if I didn't use the X5 on ice yet. 🙂

@Sniper9 are you using the regular JRZ stainless runners or the higher end black DLC runners? Looks like they offer both options. How do you like these?

I'm using the dlc. They're very nice and jrz is essentially the same as step. Same factory.

But if you've never used dlc before just stick with the jrz stainless. Still very good quality steel. The dlc coating is nice but not worth the extra price imo. I only get the dlc bc I've been using dlc coated since step black steel and when I don't use dlc everything doesn't feel like they bite enough or glide smooth enough 🤪

Keep your stock Bauer's as a backup just in case. And tbh Bauer steel isn't great but they're not TERRIBLE. Lots of pros actually use Bauer TI and stainless.  But with that said, pros have sharpening at their disposal whenever and also multiple blades easily available so edge retention may not be as important to them in terms of saving time and money on frequent sharpenings.

I used blacksteel from step back in the days on my Ribcor skates. I enjoyed these.... especially for the edge/sharpening retention. However I'm not good enough of a skater to be able to say the glide was better than on regular steel. I think the profiling as more to with it than the steel itself.

I will see if I go all in for the DLC or just for the JRZ old school steel.  yep will keep the stock bauer as backup just in case but won't have them profiled. Curently Elite Polaris is my go-to profile.

Fun fact I'm located in Quebec city so really close of JRZ headquarter.
