removing steel from pitch holder

Recommended Posts

Couple questions. Is there a trick to adjusting the pitch on the pitch holder. I have removed the screws from the holder, and have been able to pull the front of the steel from the holder, but I cannot get the rear portion to budge at all to +1 or -1. Also, Is it possible to remove the steel from the holder completely, while the holder is mounted to the skate.

When I have adjusted mine, I have used gloves, putting one hand on each end of the steel, and rocked the steel back and forth until the back portion dislodged. The back is tight, for sure. But it does move. And yes, it is possible to remove the steel from the holder completely.

I'm sure there are others who have an easier method. This is just what worked for me.

Using a glove is a good method. Here's the PITCH instructions from Mission's Website.

I had some S500's for a couple of months; one of the blades moved through the full range of pitch with really firm hand pressure at the back, but the other one was ridiculously difficult. I couldn't apply enough force with a gloved hand, so I ended up draping a chunk of leather over the blade and going after it with a pliers. It worked, but I needed to do this to every time I wanted to move the pitch again. By the way I found no difference whether the front screw was loose or removed. Good luck.

The pitch can be a pain some time...One way to get the steel loose is to take out all of the bolts and put the skate on. Then kick the skate back and fourth (make sure it is on something soft so your don't damage the blade). This may jar the blade loose.

As a side note, we redesigned the Pitch for 2005 (L Series Skates).

Here's what I do. Once the bolts are out, wrap a towel or other bit of fabric around the steel. Grab the steel with a pair of pliers, the steel will come right out. Then put the steel back in gently and put the back bolt in poision first. It is very tight at first but will loosen up if you change them frequently.

I'll give that a shot. I had looked at the instructions on missions website already, it just feels like there is something holding the steel in the back of the holder, i've gotten the front out of the holder fine.
