fitting question

Recommended Posts

Hi there.

Im new into Icehockey and the sellers in the local store arent well educated, so thats why im asking here.

Ive got a pair of Skates, but im not sure if they are rhe right size.

When im in the skate and i push my feet as far into the toe cap as i can, i can put like a pen into the heel pocket.

If im completely pressed into the heel pocket, the toe cap has some room (logical ;))

When im lacing my skates, ive got to lace them as hard and strong as i can, dont know if thats right.

Ive heard that your skates should fit so good that you could actually skate without lacing them.

Please help me.

[if those skates are too big, i have to sell them and by another and choose the size with your advices]

If all you can fit is a pen behind the heel when the toe is forward, then the fit should be OK. I don't think they are too big. After you kick the heel back, your toes should feather the cap. Lace the skates up, then bend the knees, the toes should come away from the cap. What model skate?

Well the fit is slightly personal preference as a lot of people like their skates to be extremely tight-fitting. In general though, what Jimmy has posted is usually the norm for skate fitting. When your heel is kicked to the back of the boot, you should be able to slightly scrape the front of the boot with your toe. One of the other things that you can try is to take out the insole of the skate and matching your heel with the heel of the insole. There should be a little bit of space (maybe 1/4"-1/2") between the front of the insole and your toes. Width-wise, just make sure that your feet aren't squeezed so tight that it alters your foot in any way. Your toes will naturally squeeze together somewhat depending on the size of the toe box but the arch and forefoot shouldn't be pressured very much. Remember that your feet will expand slightly after skating for a while.

Tying your skates very tightly is usually a sign that the skate is not supporting you enough and/or that your feet/ankles/calves aren't strong enough yet for proper balance on skates. It could be the skates but that would mean that they were grossly oversized for your feet to begin with.

If you have more than 1/3" room, you should be able to go down a size. I usually go with what Jimmy said. If the pen is tight to your heel and the skate, you have the right size. If there is more room than that, you should think about trying a size down.

When trying on skates next time, make sure you try on a size smaller than what you think is the correct fit. It will help avoid problems like this.

Thanks,

i just tested various objects which fit into the heel pocket when i press my toes into the cap.

iam able to put a buttplug (the woodie) into it, which is 2.5cm (2.5 centimeter = 0.984252 inch)

so i should step a half or a whole size down ?

the most important part of skate fitting is actually supporting the navicular joint, subtalar joint and the talus from underneath the foot rather then the stiffness of the boot our how tight you tie them.. then falls the rest.

Probably actually 2.5-3 full sizes down. One full size is 1/3", and you almost have an inch.

i just measured up my foot (right one) and its 27.5 cm (= 10.8267717 inch) and the insole of the 11 boot is 29cm (= 11.4173228 inch)

which makes a difference of 0,59055 inch !

so which size do you recommend ?

ah i have to add that the mission s100 isnt available in half sizes.. so i guess i need a 10, right ?

thank you guys so very much !!

is it actually better to have like 0,3 inch air in the front (until the toe cap ends) or should the toes touch the cap?

If your feet are done growing, the tighest fit you can tolerate is probably the best fit for you. Tighter skates will let you feel more in control of your edges and there won't be any room for your feet to slide around in your skates, which causes you to lose power in your strides... my skates fit my feet tight to the toe cap and tight in the heel.
