Ice Hockey Virgin

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I'm an ice hockey virgin. I've played roller hockey for 11+ years and can ice skate fine (stopping needs some work). I finally have easy access to an ice rink and want to start playing on ice.

I know this was touched on in a previous topic, but I'm looking for a pair of skates. I'm currently using size 9D Mission D1's and they fit perfectly (I have fairly flat feet). Seeing as how the 2003 Pure Fly's are closeout, they seem like a likely candidate. Does the sizing change much from Roller-->Ice on Mission's line? Yes, I know I should try on skates before I buy them, but being stuck in Indiana more or less limits my options.

As for the blades, (I'm assuming the skates come unsharpened), I need to pick a radius. I play center and like making my cuts and turns, but also spend a fair amount of time skating backwards.

Years and countless pairs of skates have taught me not to be cheap when buying skates, as a quality skate makes a huge difference.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

-Gene

Good question on the radius thing. I've been playing the same position for almost 10 years and I've always used whatever the normal is for shops. I wonder if it makes enough difference, I should try something else out.

Gene-- Mission ice skates seem to run 1/2 to 1 size bigger than inlines, so you would need to wear a smaller size (either 8 or 8 1/2). As for the radius, that can be changed at any time, so when you get your skates, use them a few times and see if there's anything you need to change, like the pitch, radius, or sharpening hollow. You may find you're perfectly comfortable with the skates the way they come...

Thats strange, I find them to be exact. At least when it is Mission to Mission.

The skates now are running very close to the same size...In the past they ran about 1/2 size bigger in ice...That changed when DNA came out...

you mean from Mission RH-to Mission Ice correct? I was goofing around in the shop, I tired on a 10.5 D-1 just to see how it fits, compared to my 10.5 V-12. The D-1 was WAY too small for me. I needed atleast an 11.5
