Taping Pants

Recommended Posts

Do most people tape their hockey pants because i see alot of people do and when i do i cant seem to move well, am i taping them wrong or does anyone have any tips about how to tape them so you still get full free movement? :) B)

i don't tape mine, can't stand it. I just tuck the back of the cuffs inside the achilles flap on my skates so they don't get caught up in the back wheel (which results in extreme pain an embarrassment).

A lot of ppl i know tape their pants. They usually just tape them low at the bottom of the shin so theres still movement. Are you taping them to hold your shins on or b/c your pants are too baggy??

I usually just use laces on my shins. Though when I wear my smaller shin guards I just tape top to bottom with postal tape

I just tape at the bottom to prevent the bottom from catching on my wheels. tried tucking them in, but they come out after a while.

When I tape I make sure I have plenty of room to move, bend, maneuver, etc. before putting the tape on...I hate the feeling of being restricted.

i always have to make sure mine are tucked in. I took a naaaasty spill one game. I was absolutely tearing down the rink to get back on D, turned around to skate backwards, and my pants rolled up in the back wheel. It sucks , you can feel the pants catching, and you have that split second that seems like an eternity to realize you're goin down HARD and theres nothin you can do about it lol.

I tape mine. I hate the feeling of my pants flapping everywhere. I tape right under my knee and right at the end of my shin guards. That way I dont have to worry about my pants coming out of the flap on the back of my skates.

the worst is if your skate is untied and it gets caught in the front wheel I fell flat on my face.

Ha...I took an embarassing spill like that one time, except rather than my pants getting caught on my wheel, my back wheel axle came out and I tripped backwards over my own back wheel. :P

I do not tape my pants to keep them from getting onto my wheels

i just tuck the back into the back of my skates. althought, i do tape my shin guards so then do not move. but i dont tape the pants i tape the actually shin guard under my pants. but it bothered the back of my legs bcz there was sticks stuff on the back of my legs all the time. so now i just wear lng socks under my shin guards so i dont tape the back of my legs and i still get great mobility. if you can understand that it works good for me lol :P

I don't tape my "pants" (I still find it bizarre calling them that, but I will, for your sakes  ). I tape my shinguards, partially to keep 'em still, and partially 'cause they're old and falling apart - they really need tape to stay still.

The pants I wear are generally pretty baggy, so I tuck 'em into the back of my skates. My skates have pretty big tendon guards, so it's rare for them to come undone :)

And the mention of axels breaking reminds me of something last year - guy coming in one-on-one with me, makes a move and his front axel splits, causing him to faceplant quite spectacularly in front of me. Made me smile :D

You could go old school and use some laces. I find it amazing how the style of pants has changed from when i was a little kid to now. Back when i was a little kid i was always playing up a league so i got to see how the older players did it. Back then the pants werent as baggy as there are now. Back then you didnt have to tape your pants if you didnt want to. You werent worried about them getting caught in your wheels. Now it seems like most people are wearing these big bagging pants that they have to tape to keep out of the wheels.

ill cut to the point.... I dont use tape. I went out and bought a cheap pair of nike quest two pants and they arent baggy at all.

Sorry for having a bit of a rant.

Most of us "older players" that you're referring to :D used the old Black Biscuit pants (and a few other brands) and you're right, they seemed to run smaller than present day pants. Now there is considerable bagginess but for me it's good because I use bulky shinguards (Jofa xx90).

I've never really taped my pants my whole life. I've always used those WSI Shin Sleeves and they worked fine to hold the shinguards in place. However if I'm playing defense in a tournament (where I'm sliding down a lot to block shots), I'll tape around my pants just to keep the shinguards in place. Always keep that emergency roll of Phattape in my bag just in case...

I <3 those old black biscuit pants. Even though I have numerous pairs of mission, tour, bauer, hystyk pants, I always go back to my black biscuits.

Do they not make black biscuits anymore?

Also, My buddy has a pair of Bauer Vapor roller pants that are pretty sweet. Pockets + straps on the ankles to prevent the pants from going into the wheels.

They still make them, still called the Pro pant.

Those Bauer pants are nice with the velcro. I never use the pockets and I hate the belt, but otherwise they're comfy.

Yea, I remember those old black biscuit pants, those were pretty sweet. Nowadays I just use laces though. Works a lot better than tape because I feel I can get them tight without cutting off circulation to my leg like I sometimes do with tape, haha. You can also adjust the laces during the game if they start to come loose or something, not to mention you dont have to spend 3 bucks every other week to buy a new roll of tape!

Taping the pants was actually to make sure you had unrestricted movement of the knees and thighs..that is also why "baggy" pants became the vogue..

By pulling up the pant leg so that there was plenty of surplus pant above the tape, that insured there would never be any drag from the sweaty pant trying to climb up your leg during full extension, and getting caught because it was a bit sticky.

Then when the Narch Pro teams started doing it , it became a fad.....it was also to keep the pant bottom off the wheels as well, but more to be sure that the upper leg had unrestricted movement.
