Fedorov91 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2005 I was headed back home from Hockey and the roads were pretty bad tonight... very icy/snowy, very easy to slide on. I was driving no faster then 35-40 mph the whole way home just to be safe. This was on Telegraph road by the way, in case any of you are from MI/Detroit, and the speed limit is usually 50mph. Anyway I was sitting in one of those U Turn thingys waiting for traffic to clear. I was going to go but I saw these headlights coming at me REALLY FAST, so I stayed put. The car was a Silver Cavalier and this thing was flying, I mean they had to be doing at least 80+ if not 90mph. I was just sitting there thinking to myself "what the F**K are they thinking?!" The traffic light wasnt very far ahead and unfortunately I saw what was about to happen before it even happened... it was turning yellow and I knew there was no way they were going to be able to stop in time. Sure enough the light turned red well before they entered the intersection, and even though they slammed on the brakes, they just kept sliding still going very fast. The car was T-boned on the passenger side by an older Jeep. It was terrible just seeing that and hearing the noise, gave me a sick feeling in my stomach. :( Right after it happened like 4 cars stopped to come help them. I pulled off to the side and called 911 and told them the intersection and what happened. As I drove by I saw the side where the Cavalier got hit and it was not a pretty sight. It was almost smashed in half and the whole car looked like crumpled up aluminum foil. The Jeep's front end also had lots of damage. It was just kind of a sad, almost traumatic experience, I have never seen anything like that before and it all happened a few hundred feet in front of me. As they drove by me I saw that it was two younger black dudes in the front seat, probably around my age, I couldnt tell if anyone was in the back... I want to say that I hope they're ok but I dont know about whoever was sitting on that passenger side because it was really bad. Things like this really makes you think about doing stupid @ss sh*t and the consequences. I mean, I'll be honest. I'm a 18 year old male and I have a sports car, and I do speed like lots of other people. But even so, I'm not completely stupid about it either. On a road like Telegraph where it's 50mph, I might do 60-65mph at most, and thats in good weather conditions and light traffic. I have no idea what those guys were thinking driving that fast in the snow. It pisses me off somehow, even though it didn't involve me and I don't even know who they were. It weird how things like that can affect you. Anyway, just thought I'd vent and tell you guys about that experience. I think it's pretty fu*king stupid & sad. D3nZ 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2005 Yesterday in a 10 second period I could have seen 2 accidents. One completly ran over the red light went straight thru and one stopped at the intersection while her light was green. People just don't think when they drive anymore, they are too occupied with other things like signing or talking on the cellphone. With the huge snowstorm we got a couple of days ago, people just don't realize that snow is slippery and they are driving like there wasn't any snow on the pavement and like they could stop in a 2-3m range. bdj 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2005 Just thought I would add, driving to my game on the highway in a blizzard I almost got rear ended. I stopped at a red light and was waiting, all of a sudden a red cav came up so fast behind me he had to swerve over the curb and in the end he ended up about 10 feet infront of me on the curb. He would have completly totaled my car.

Stopped at a red light and some forgets to hit the brakes or thinks that you'll run the red light it so that he'll get the extra car length to stop...idiots. MDE3 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2005 On a funnier note.....my uncle up in Canada coming home from Smith's Falls Ont. to Renfrew Ont., came over a hill and hit some black ice. This sent him into a spin which ended up with his car crossways on the shoulder, with the front wheels over the embankment, and the back end across the shoulder and just sticking out onto the main road a little. He was unhurt but it was getting chilly, and before the day of the cell phone, so he was quite pleased to see the OPP cruiser come over the hill. He was standing out in the road waiving his arms for them to stop, or at least slow down, and could see the two officers sitting quite upright and looking exasperatedly at this fool who obviously did not know how to drive in winter weather. They (as he described them) had that typical officious look on their faces, as they approached the scene....until the driver hit the brakes..At this point my uncle recalled, their expression changed dramaticaly as they promptly lost control and plowed into the right rear corner of the station wagon. The impact drove it fully over the embankment and down about 40' into some trees. With the miracle of radio, they were able to summon help from a fellow patrol car....who though warned (right..sure..we drive in this stuff all the time...whadd'ya mean "be carefull")..proceeded to repeat the same manouvers as the first patrol car and slammed smack into the rear end of it...driving it halfway over the same embankment.... My uncle was choking he was laughing so hard..the officers were somewhat less amused....They finally radioed a couple of wreckers, who came out..with chains on all corners....Needless to say the wreckers had some fun too. MDE3 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2005 Yeah..black ice has no mercy....no matter what is painted on the side of your vehicle. I remember trying to make the last plane for two days out of LG1 on the James Bay Hydro electric Project... I was doing about 75(mph) in my 2500 suburban coming around the last sweeping curve before the airport, with about 5 minutes to make the flight....The curve became black ice right at the apex......I swung around in a slow 360 before my front wheels caught some rough ice on the shoulder which happened to snap me completely through the 360, and back in the right direction(I had slammed it into neutral when this happened). I re-gained control of the vehicle, came out of the spin still doing 70 mph..and made it to the airport on time.....even had a few extra minutes to change my shorts..... Chadd 916 Report post Posted March 11, 2005 Black ice, one of the biggest things about winter that bothers me around here. It's just ice, nothing sinister or different. Of course on an asphalt road clear shiny ice may look black, but it's no different./end of rant
