Can I clearcoat my SL?

Recommended Posts

I've had my SL for 3 games now and already big flakes of blue are just peeling off of it. If I went to a craft store or Wal-mart or something and bought clear spraypaint (if they make it?) and sprayed the blue part of the SL would it help against it chipping so easy? Or would it be a waste. Or if I decided just to spray the blue area over with black paint (like blacking out the bottom of a stick) would I need to get clear as well to spray over the black once it dries? Is it possible to screw up the balance of the stick very much doing this, I dont know how heavy a few layers of paint would be on that much of the shaft .

By the way, the Drury curve is MONEY!!

I highly doubt a layer of clear coat will prevent further chipping. But try it. And unless you get stupid with the paint, No. . . it will not affect the balance of the stick.

It would, however, void the warrantee (so don't do it until it's off warrantee).

But, also something else to keep in mind, some types of spray paint can be harmful to certain type of composite materials. Be sure to buy the right kind of clear coat.

There was a thread not that long ago about a dude that would dip his blade in some plastic goo that you could get at Home Depot (to put rubber grip on tools). That might be interesting. However, that would likely add a few (not many) grams to the stick (and if not done right, the coat could be uneven).

Just thinking aloud.....

ive seen numerous people talking about the sl and paint chipping. whats the big deal? it doesnt affect performance, and youre stick most likely isnt going to last very long anyway. personally, i like broken in stuff. i hate new gloves. when i was younger, i was always jealous of the guy who had the shaft with the paint all chipped off. the guys who played in sweat pants and old gear were guys who had been playing forever and could care less about fancy shiny stuff - they were always the best players. the paint being off meant he wasnt afraid to leave a piece of it on you. the people with the shiny new sticks and nice equipment were always rich beginners with lots of money to spare. i used to see them in my adult leagues when i was old enough to play. i used to scuff up my stuff to try to look like the older guys. a lot of young guys were like that back east where i grew up. its funny how times change. people buy new synergies just to get the new color. i recently saw a kid who had turned his synergy into a shaft and had used it so long almost all the paint came off and it was mostly black and all messed up....sweet. i felt a pang of jealousy like when i was a kid. weird, huh? he was pretty good too.

sorry i got off topic - just ranting. i suspect that the blue coat is a lot like the original synergies whose silver paint jobs flaked pretty quickly. youre probably going to do more harm than good messin with it, but i wish you luck. the bottom of your stick takes the most damage and there is no way to avoid contacting other sticks. this is the difference im talking about between the generations - the only way to make that stop is to not play hard with it. i would think you would want it to look as chipped as possible.

I think your in no position to talk about how hard I play. Personally I dont like my stuff looking like shit. Am I going to go run through the mud with my new shoes so they look broken in. No. Am I going to go run a black shirt through the washer 500 times so it looks faded and worn. No.

I've got some of my original equipment thats 3 years old. My gloves have holes in the palms and all the decal things are scrapped off my shinguards. The nylon toe of my skates is ripped to shit and you can see the plastic underneath. Are you jealous? Do you automatically assume I'm good because some of my equipment DOES look like shit?

Now, as far as the paint eating the composite, anyone know which paint will NOT do that?

Chip and scuff yes. Big flakes of paint falling off no. If spraying it with something will atleast keep big flakes from peeling off of it. And there is enough people talking about it that it must be an opinion that other people besides me have.

So what's the long and short of your rant? That he's obsessed w/ the looks of his equipment?

If so, it's quite apparent he's not the only one eh?

At least the paint chips don't inspire emotions for him.

Dude, Betteman, Fireonice, Dude . . . I'm pissed too my SL is flaking like a leper. Easton probably didn't pay too much attention to a paint formula that would be applied to the part of a stick that gets beat on the most . . . although it should, because the Red and Blue fade are what distinguish the SL. They are probably using the same cheap paint formula they used for the pros during the World Cup - - Where a player used one stick a game. Now they are like, oh shite, we are making these things for retail with the same paint pattern and the retail customer uses a stick for 6 mos. to a year, not 2 sticks per 1.6 games. Easton will change the formula, I am sure. FireOnIce, just enjoy the privelege of having a 425 gram Top-of-the-line hockey stick when half the population of the world doesn't have indoor plumbing or filtered drinking water. Relax and worry about the performance, not the look.

Renfrew has something called "Shaftsaver" which is kind of a wrap you put on the area of your stick that gets abused the most (usually right above the hosel area)....my friend has it on his stick and it seems like it's working....no scuffs or chips at all. They have it at Epuck.

As for sticks yeah, expect your stick to get beat up! I know you value your new stick (I'm still a little anal about my xn10 too!) but if you don't want it to chip and get marks then maybe you should only use it at stick and puck!

neo, the point of my rant was that its funny how the way people look at equipment has changed. back in the day, you didnt want your stuff to look new - now you dont want the paint to chip off your shiny stick. polar opposites thanks to the marketing. that was my point. im not criticizing him, i was actually comparing myself to him. though its funny to me someone would worry so much about paint chipping - i myself was just as anal in the opposite direction, making me just as anal. i was just commenting on the differences. i thought i was insulting myself, which wouldnt require you adding on more insults.

First put the shaft saver wrap on a stick you don't use much and make sure you like it. I tried the wrap and didn't like it and when I pulled it off a lot of paint came with it. If you put that wrap around the bottom of an SL and pulled it off you wouldn't have to worry about flaking paint anymore.

I am going to have to agree with Mack and Modo. People are too obsessed with the look of their sticks and spend way to much time thinking of ways to keep them looking "hot" and such. I am sure if I had an SL I would be pist that it chipped, but I would not be wasting hours of my time trying to put a clear coat on the stick. Is the structural integrity still there? Yes. Does the paint change the performance? No. It is a sport, not a beauty pageant.

I have yet had a player come up to me at a face-off..."wow cool stick thats hot"

this is silly..

I like all the paint chips... shows you play and get involved and actually touch the puck...lol
