Ipod Help

I've been trying to fix my Ipod for the last couple of hours with no sign of anything working and was hoping someone knew what is going on. Basically, all the files I had on it have been wiped. It updates everytime I open Itunes and seems to just copy all my files over the existing ones ( it claims I've used up 5GB but I dont have a single file on the thing). Everytime Itunes opens it asks me to name it and register it, which I have done at least five times. Since I only have 6 GB it won't allow me to update it anymore as not everything will fit. Is there any way to remove the "files" from my Ipod or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it has a feature on the updating program that allows you to "Reset" your ipod

Speaking of iPod trouble, USPS lost mine during shipping. So I don't know whats happening now.

Send it back to Apple, I'm sure that it is a 'defect'
