" In 30 regular-season games, he had 15 points playing for a coach who speaks fluent English but sticks to Russian for practices and games."

I wonder how he knew what the heck was going with a coach that spoke Russian in all the games and practices. That would suck.

Yeah I wouldnt really feel safe playing for a team supposedly with mob involvement................

Typical crap story- full of "grey propaganda" and stuff... :rolleyes: "...Do you want to be controlled by the media..." indeed

As for Vinny - SOUR GRAPES!!! He was largerly invisible/poor and his team lost in the first round of playoffs.

No, really! The story is SO typical and SO crap, the moral is wrong, the points it made about hockey are wrong ... !!! grrrr

PS Jagr is playing in Omsk (one of the "siberian cities" mentioned in the article :rolleyes: ) - playing great, awsome, super and with real heart, passion. Go figure ;)

PPS hockey=NHL=show for most Americans

hockey=Game in Russia

Just curious.....what specific references were "grey propaganda"..the mob references?, the conditions references? How was the hockey misrepresented...was the part about the clutching and grabbing misrepresented? Just curious about your comments....apparently you have some first hand input to give.

He probably has to. Probably owes the Mob a nice chunk of change from gambling...

What's the diff between the RSL and the NHL then? They're both forms of entertainment and they both pay the entertainers very well. I'm sure that there's people in russia who don't give a rat's ass about hockey, they probably aren't in the same numbers that they are in the US, but they exist, I'm sure.

Also, most of the arenas are less than 4000 people according to that article, are you really going to say that in hockey rich areas in the US, the fans care less than the ones in Russia? Ok, I'll give you that not every fan grows up playing the game, but that doesn't mean that they're not passoinate and love watching it. In the end, it's all a show. Some will watch b/c they just love teams and others will watch because they love hockey, deal with it.

Sorry, I've been away...

"Gray propaganda" - means a tendency to dwell on the negative aspects too much and to ignore the good aspects. This way if one wants to give bad publicity to something/somebody, he does not need to resolve to lying and hence everything is "legal" etc... It was a known media weapon during the cold war, both sides have used it extensivly. It makes me cringe however when I see those "horrible, nasty , depressing Russia" stories.

From my perspective (I've watched just about evry single game that was televised and broadcasted on the net) - the hockey has been absolutely wonderfull, a breath of fresh air after the drab robotic monotomy of every year's NHL playoffs. Big ice, right attitude (pass, skate, playmake), great players = superb season of hockey. I would take this kind of Russian League over NHL anyday. IMHO of course, but the bottom line is: all the depressing colors the article's auther picked to discribe the RHL were totaly inapropriate. The fact is that a lot of hockey was superb, the atmosphere was exciting, Russia was obviously in love with hockey as well (some huge Moscow arenas were sold out for the first time in over ten years).

Vinnie has played for a coach who is a fan of "NA hockey". Unfortunately for him, he had russians for 95% of his squad and 2 candiens (one of whom - sour grapes Vinnie- has played VERY poorly). Also they have had zero for heart and desire - two very important ingerdient for NA system to work. It was a poor team with a poor coach.

"clutching/grabbing" - it was there! But it almost like it did not matter( too much anyway - compared to NHL). Hockey was fast and fun regardless :blink: Kinda like people were saying about the 80's-90's hockey "clutching was there , but we've just played through it"... Strange. Big ice is a major factor of course.

"American fans are poor fans" - sorry guys, I did not mean that at all... ;) Just got a bit overexcited really :D Champions League fooball was on , and NOTHING compares to soccer fans... Especially hot dog eating american football fans - the stereotype;);) :D Only joking! Hockey fans rule - wherever they are!

There was a real good article on him and Richards in SI. It was a couple months ago, I think it was in the edition where USC won the National Championship on the cover. I did a review on it for school.
