Yep.  Makes perfect sense.  This is why I asked about sharpening myself.

Presuming I participate in the project, I'd also like to remove sharpening as a variable in my reviews.  And, since those with a Sparx can get a repeatable hollow (or, FBV in my case) with very little hassle, it may make sense for us to sharpen ourselves.

However, now that I think about it....

If you leverage the availability of those that have a sharpener, it could kinda be like TWO studies - one on the profiling, one on the sharpening...particularly since we could always go back to the hollow/FBV we like without returning the steel for sharpening.

    Hmmmm.........

9/10 times if you profile steel you WILL need to adjust the ROH/FBV since as you add more blade contact with the ice you should be going with a more flat hollow.

Coldclay, thank you for such detailed post. I am aware now of x1 material issue. Not sure if lite is much better. I was impressed by weight in junior size.

He has junior Tacks shoulders now in L and it's way too small now.

Novotnoa, thank you, I will look into Nexus line and esp 8000.

Goalieman39, Tacks is a good choice. Definitely.

Nicolas, we are north of you. In Vancouver.

Regarding store, I have 15% off everything at 3 local stores, Source, Larry and Taylor.

His measurements are height 5.7, weight 140lbs, shoe size 9.

    And he is significantly growing.

He is not interested in new gear, he loves the game, so due to this we go to buy new gear when he is out of old one completely.

His equipment size is Junior Large, shins 12, gloves 12( palm is 20cm long). And pants XL Junior.

Before tryouts we had equipment check and he got a list of things to change, mostly everything, except gloves and helmet. Shin elbow shoulders are way too small, I didn't know that cause I didn't see him in gear without jersey and socks for years )

Gloves are ripping off in finger area. Supertacks.

Helmet is old.we can't find a replacement. Bauer doesn't fit. Most others are not in his team color which is gold.

Let me know what you decide to go with. Happy to give you a friends and family discount on anything you might need. Burnaby colors, as you mention gold?

Need to buy new set of protection for my son. He plays competitive AAA as left wing. He is in Senior Small size.

As always, most important is lightweight and fit, along with good protection.

Of course, we will try to visit store, before that looking for advice and experience.

Lines that we are looking for are:

Vapor 1x lite and 1x ( heavily discounted now)

    Jetspeed ft1

    Nexus 2n

    Warrior alpha qx

    And supreme 1s.

Mobility and fit most important factor.

I am a huge fan of Warrior. Second would be CCM Jet Speed and Tacks. I have never been a big Bauer protective fanatic. I own a shop in Seattle and we provide team gear sales and service to the local teams, AAA, Juniors and WHL. I dont see as many kids wearing Bauer protective as I used to.

  4. It's likely they will replace the skates, though they might insinuate the issue is due to improper baking. In my experience anytime they see an eyelet like this that is the first response I see from CCM or Bauer. Its actually a pretty easy fix to sew more material there to strengthen it or to use an oversized eyelet.

I really like the new DEM system personally. I’ll agree it is a bit confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s probably a bit easier than what we had to do prior. I like the fact that if everything is done correctly, the scans automatically update in the customer’s order once emailed, so you get instant confirmation that everything has been received properly. I find that customers have been responding really well to being able to track their orders via email as well. I like keeping customers in the loop as much as possible, so this just adds a bit more polish and professionalism to the whole skate ordering process in my opinion.

I guess the only thing that customers have mentioned being weird is them submitting payment to True instead of the shop when they go online to schedule a fitting appointment.

Felt the need to intervene here as I was the one that primarily worked on this remade pair.

I worked closely with Rob at the factory to tweak this new pair to ensure everything would be corrected properly. We were able to tighten the boot specifically in the areas where he was having problems with using the black wick liner per Rob's recommendation, so I opted to default to the expert in that case. Obviously looking at the pictures we need to work further on the boots to tighten up the lace-up overall.

That being said, I have been working closely with Scott over the last few months to develop better methods to tighten skates, so if there are still any areas you are struggling with I would strongly recommend you reach out so we can make further adjustments. I have spent multiple, hour long sessions working on the original pair of boots but only got to work on this pair once or twice.

I also want to stress the point that this is what I do professionally, so I am not going to "get sick" of solving problems for customers and am available nearly 24/7 for all of my clients. If you would like to make the trip back, I would be more than happy to work on this pair you are struggling with and attempt to solve your problems further.

    Tyson / @Sk8Stk,

Interested to hear what you think about the new ordering process? We just started to switch and I find it way more complicated.  I do like that the form is all digital now but the splitting of the customer portion and the shop portion is a headache.

He should seriously check out the Jetspeed Control skates then. They are very similar to first gen Jetspeeds (Speedcore 2 based FT380) with an upgraded tongue from the FT1 and outsole from the FT390. They also have the higher +2mm stainless runners. For $499 cdn.

It sounds like you work in a shop - but maybe not a Source for Sports though? That would make it tougher since these are a Source exclusive SMU. But if I'm him and I loved my first gen Jetspeeds, I'd try these on (go up half a size since sizing changed).

The CCM Jetspeed Senior Hockey Skate is a Source for Sports Exclusive model based on the CCM Jetspeed FT380 Hockey Skate. Our skate experts have upgraded several specifications to enhance the overall comfort and performance of the skate.

    Source Exclusive Upgrades:

Upgraded Tritech White Felt tongue with Molded Lace Bite Protection from FT1

Upgraded Composite Outsole with Exhaust System from FT390

Upgraded CCM Speed Blade Stainless +2mm Steel

Yeah, I put him in a CCM Jetspeed Xtra Pro + II SMU and he loved them. They look to be very much the same skate as the Source for Sports model. In fact, to me, they look like a V2 of the previous generation Jet Speed Pro.

Trigger is the best shooting stick I’ve ever used.  Feel slightly lags behind the other two but if you play a “Laine” style game it’s the best stick for that purpose IMO.

The shaft shapes are also slightly different on each - not a positive or negative, but a matter of preference worth calling out.

Agreed. My current stick lineup is the QRE, Trigger and A6.0HT. The A6.0HT doesn't shoot as good as the QRE or Trigger but has better puck feel. The QRE and Trigger shoot excellent and effortless but are a little dampened.

Saw the video and didn’t see a Knouff of a change between previous models to justify.  CCM likes to use the word optimize a lot which to me sounds like it wasn’t big enough of a change to collect something else.I think the frequency of stick releases lately  is too much. 1.5 to 2 years Is where it should be at

    Optimized means slightly less weight.

I have to agree with Winger on this.

Just because it's the best that money can buy doesn't mean it's the best for you and what you need. I myself recently fell into that trap and thank God CCM had the "90 day satisfaction guarantee". Although I was reluctant to do it, I switched from a set of AS1's to a set of Vapors and I have to say that although the AS1's were an awesome set of skates,  I can get the Vapors to do much more for me. The fit, the feel and the control are much better because everything finally came together and I found what was best for my build, experience and skating ability. After having the AS1's for the better part of a three month period and averaging 15+ hours per week on the ice, I believe (and this is only my opinion) that a more experienced, heavier built player that is an aggressive or more powerful skater would probably be able to reap the true benefits of the AS1's.

    Just a thought.

    I agree.

So, you're obviously not asking for yourself...but, out of curiosity, are you asking for a youth player?  As in 13 or younger?

If so, then, from a skating coach's perspective, yes.  The AS1 is (almost) definitely too stiff.

All other things being equal, youth players should never be in a skate that stiff.  It will hamper the development of proper skating mechanics and teach bad habits that are virtually impossible to break.

Think 'middle of the line' skates for youth players....they need no more stiffness than is offered in a Tacks 9080 (maaaaaaaaybe 9090 - for a stronger/heavier player) or Jetspeed FT 380 (wouldn't go 390s - they're VERY stiff).

(Incidentally, the same holds true for an adult recreational/beer-league player that isn't routinely pushing themselves to their limits.  Pro level stiff skates are just not needed by the vast, VAST majority of adults.  But, then again, adult players don't generally ask me what skates to buy - youth parents do....😉

16 years old, 5' 9" and 165lbs. He is an excellent skater was actually drafted for the WHL. I would put him in a pair of True skates but he said they are too ugly. lol

  11. Does anyone else find the AS1 to be a little too stiff of a skate? CCM had stopped retail factory production of the FT1 in order to prepare for the next Jetspeed release and the only retail sizes available for this player are in the AS1 and 70K. The 70K is way too big for the player and the AS1 fits him perfect, but he has been complaining that he cannot find the proper way to lace them to allow for good stability/support while allowing proper flexion. He previously used the 1st generation Jetspeed skate which is quite a stiff skate, not as stiff as the AS1, but still... I somewhat understand what he is going through as I personally found the first generation one-piece Super Tacks to be too stiff. Though the AS1 is slightly less stiff, it's overly stiff for me as well and feels more like a ski boot than a hockey skate.

I doubt that it's 'a majority'.  Perhaps a 'statistically significant minority'.  Who knows, though - people do seem to be sharply divided on the Step holder/runner combo.

Personally, after about a month with my True skates, I don't have any specific issues with the holder.  Yes, the runner attachment mechanism is a little wonky and I definitely admit that I wouldn't want to have to change steel in a hurry; but I do like the runners and I can confidently say that Step both sharpens and holds an edge MUCH better than both Bauer and CCM stock steel.

I've heard something like this, too.  Only, I didn't hear the words 'cut off supplies'.  Instead, I heard 'significantly raise the cost'....

I think since Tydan and a few others are going to start offering steel for eh Step/VH holder we will see more people using them. It really is a great holder, especially compared to SB holder with those stupid screws and bolts.
