  1. glad to hear yours is going smoothly, aviator... mine has been an absolute bitch lately...
  2. i was cleared and released form my doctor on thursday. i skated today, 99 days post surgery. i can do cross overs going to the left, but to the right im not strong enough (and theres pain). I can go backwards reeeeaaaallly slowly, and stop facing the left. havent tried to the right. I only lasted 30 minutes, and tried not to go too hard, but i did get moving a couple times. Need to get my skates sharpened with a deeper hollow, i think i'm on 11/16" right now, which is what i got in june. between harder ice and weaker legs, it was sliding out a little when i got moving faster.
  3. went to the LHS and worked up my boot with the owner, who had a similar injury (his limitations is a slight loss of forward flex, and has nothing he cant do other than skiing hurts a bit) they're ugly as hell on that inside ankle, but they fit like a dream now! i can flex forward and everything. should get cleared to hit the ice on thursday. Currently i have a loss of 5 degrees on my plantar flexion, so they're expecting me to gain it all back when the swelling is reduced.
  4. the last time i was at the doctor, he told me that most people lose about 20 degrees of motion with this type of injury. I'm at about 15 degrees, but at a point where I'm still going to improve. Also, with my 15 degree loss, i already exceed "normal" flexibility, because my ankles have a freakishly large range of motion. However, this is the first time he said dont expect 100% recovery, which i'm kind of pissed he wasnt more upfront. as far as my day to day impact, it's swollen and have been told it wont go down to it's 'normal' size for another six or so months, and that my ankle will be larger than my left one on a permanent basis. I can walk fine most of the time, but still do have the odd limp thrown in there. I'm also back to light running, and am exceeding what the physical therapists expect of me at this time frame. But like kred just said, each situation is different. but for the quick and dirty on your questions: 1- you will start walking without a boot sooner than had you only broken the fibula and not had a plate in there 2-hardware not so much a problem for everyday, but i've tried my skates on and it's a problem around where the screws for the tibia are. 3-dunno yet, if i decide i need it come next june, thats when it would come out.
  5. ahhh its at a hosp... yeah. luckily my dr has an xray machine in house.
  6. i'd be cautious about not going back. the fracture may be mended and healed, but when you dont put weight on a bone for many weeks you have changes in bone density. you likely wont have a problem, but I'd go back as long as they say to, so that they can check for problems like a hairline crack or something like that. though, why you have a 5 hour long doctor visit is beyond me...that's just insane. i'm in and out in 45 mins.
  7. woooo! i'm "weeks ahead" of schedule on my recovery! the physical therapists are putting me in a pretty aggressive program, too. things are starting to feel pretty good, i'm still jsut so freaking swollen.
  8. cavs--nice set of stuff... pretty sweet indeed
  9. well had my first PT session monday. They've got me focusing on rolling onto my toes when I walk... basically reteaching me how to walk, so i dont limp around.
  10. most of the muscle and soft tissue stuff I can work out after a few steps... my balls are just so sensitive yes, i know what i just said.
  11. so how are the bottoms of your guys feet? my ankle feels fantastic, and the soft tissue sore... but the balls of my heel and balls of my toes huuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrtttttttt. two days after getting off crutches, so i expect some pain, but day-um.
  12. ewww yikes... what a nut job but... WOOO! I'm walking. In sneakers too. No big fat clunky boot like I thought I'd be in for 6 weeks. I'm still on crutches for stability for a few days, but can shed them when I feel comfortable. Will be starting physical therapy soon, too. I'm pretty excited, things are much faster than we expected. Screw removal will not happen until the 1 year mark when my bone density is back. I can start running in about a month, and when he said i can run and do cuts, i should be good to go on skates. I'll post regarding my PT appointments, the exercises and stuff for those looking for some.
  13. yeah, this one is sticking way out... the swelling is going down, so i noticed it. my solution is screw removal. ;)
  14. yeah, mines still pretty swollen, and i can feel all the screw heads. ones reaaaaallu sticking out... like visibly so.
  15. anyone have any updates on their ankles? I go back the 24th (day 40 since surgery). At which point, i should be getting off crutches. w00t
  16. copy cat :P i spray painted my holders black when i got my vector 10's... i just picked up black e-pros and they're being mounted
  17. if you dont feel comfortable go to another orthopaedic doctor... get a second opinion
  18. good lord you make no freaking sense and have ZERO understanding of trade off. true. true again. so far so good. And I like not living in pain. what? did you stop reading after the comma in my quoted post? the holes will fill back in with bone in about 3 months it fills back in, and you'd never know the holes were there. if it means im out another 3 months for a grand total of 6... or even if it puts me out of beer league for a year to heal properly... I've got thin ankles, it's almost a certain fact i'm going to have problems if we left the hardware in. it's an easy choice between a year of hockey (at the absolute max) or 50+ years of being uncomfortable because i've got screws in my ankle.
  19. you are, and there is increased risk for fracture, but the holes will fill back in with bone in about 3 months
  20. thats exactly the track i'm slated for. 12 weeks post surgery I can begin skating, allegedly. I'll probably need to get all that out, i cant feel them when i touch my foot as it is... did you get your hardware out? Even if my doctor doesnt say get some therapy, I think I'm going to pursue a few sessions to get things worked out properly. I'm a few months shy of 21, and want to minimize future soreness. If i have the same soreness level in my hand from the table saw injury, I'd be quite happy. I got my stitches out on tuesday, I'm now two weeks out from surgery. The split cast is gone, and i now wear a boot with straps and stuff. I cant put weight on it, still on crutches for 4 more weeks. Then i can walk with the boot for 6 weeks, then i should be done. I'm allowed to remove the boot to shower, and can flex my foot any which way as much as I'd like. Natural motion is fine, as it wont dislodge anything. However, I cant use any resistance or push or anything like that. So, it's good to be moving and loosening things up a bit.
  21. feels good right now... you should see the before xray... LOL,... THATS the one that looks brutal.
