Recovery after broken ankle
Wolfpack_1986 replied to ThePurpleCobra's topic in General Hockey Discussions
I'm one month shy of the 2 year mark. I fractured both maleoli, requiring screws through the tibia and a plate along my fibula. there was no soft tissue damage, but the tibia fracture went through to the joint. That said, both my physical therapist and my surgeon said that i have had the best recovery for that type of fracture they'd ever seen (oddly enough, i was my surgeons first hockey player, and now he's a surgeon for the Hurricanes). I had nearly 100% recovery on the ROM with plantar flexion (pointing toes) and a slightly tougher time (75-90%) ROM on dorsal flexion (like in a deep knee bend). The bad: may ankle is permanantly larger, and the screws on the inside ankle hurt when pressure is put on them. I had to punch my vectors to fit comfortably, but the One95's fit beautifully after baking. Additionally, there's still bad days, as well as good days. Sometimes the fucker just has a constant dull pain. It's annoying at times. It makes creaking noises.. it feels like i want to pop the joint, like cracking my knuckles, but i just cant do it, so that frustrates me. when i do pull it off on the rare occasion, holy hell does it feel good. What's this mean for hockey? Not a whole lot. There are some days when i tie my skate and am wincing from pain, but once i get moving it dulls away. There's days when i forget i broke it. Then there's days when i get off the ice feeling like garbage. It took me a good 6 months playing twice a week to get the right endurance levels back where my ankle didnt want to just quit. All in all, it might still improve from being abused (not as sensitive to big time loading as it has been in the past), but i'm at about where i'm going to get. I'm not really limited by anything, as long as I can deal with minor pain, and minor arthritis. It's a tough recovery when you fracture a joint, especially such an important one. Do everything the physical therapist says. I pushed myself quite a bit, never complained. My therapist said she had a tough time gauging how far she could push me, since i never showed any sort of pain. the biggest piece of advice is: dont be discouraged when you go in, things take time. Be realistic, and know when too much is too much. When you're back in skates, it feels toatlly foreign, but after the second skate or so, it all comes back. it's just conditioning from there. -
more like everyone else should realize they shouldnt put creedence into what he says.

uhhh, well, they werent designed to be the same fit.

I put em on, they feel like crap (the bonafide). you get what you pay for. the ak27 gloves... the graphics look funny up close. the glove is dye sublimated, and it really cheapens the look imo. an interesting concept, but the execution is less impressive in person. -
Switching Holder Sizes---263mm to 254mm

think about the skating motion, your foot rolls through the length of the blade, so it's in contact with the ice longer on a longer blade. the actual rocker you can get to be the same size, but you still have that extra length you wont roll through. I went from 255 to 238 and initially thought i was losing extra power. you feel it. -

i recently dropped down a significant holder size, especially since my orginal blades were radiused to be flatter. Any way, it was weird at first, but i got used to it just fine after a skate or two. -
or they can be hiding them as vapor XXXXs because the packages of the one95 and a vapor skate look NOTHING alike. the skate will be built on a different last from what i understand, and will have some different foams and graphics. it's pretty easy to slap some old graphics on stuff. i think he was talking about a x:60 stick not skates ah, my bad. I could see that.

yeah, it's gonna be a bitch man. I'm almost 11 months out and still have residual pain. I did have the best recover as far as function goes out of any patient that the doctors in the office have seen. So, i guess i can trade some pain for that extra bit of mobility. -

maybe you should stop going feet first into the boards ;) I'm sorry to hear that you have to go through that whole mess again. How was your other ankle feeling? -

i went back and read your description, sounds like it was far worse than mine. It's really only uncomforatable when i first lace them up. after a few minutes it's ok. I do have a pocket so there's minimal pressure on the screw heads, so that helps -

when i talked to my doctor about what that surgery would entail, he said I'd be in a boot and on crutches for 2 weeks. That's just to allow the wounds to heal properly. He told me i could walk after that, but it would be 3 months or more before my bone was fully healed. Of course every situation will vary. Are yours particularly painful? I thought i was going to want them out, but honestly, I'm near full range of motion (95%ish), and the inside ankle only hurts in my skates. Well, there is the daily pain associated, but its not bad enough to make me want to endure another surgery and recovery. Its only risking a decrease in range of motion. -

if you're in a beer league, I cant stress enough really taking your time. Dont push it. Go ahead and get back in skates, but your ankle will tire quickly. I took my time getting back, because when your ankle gets as tired as it does your skating gets shot to all hell and can end up being dangerous (ankle giving out and going down, etc). -

i sat on my ass, i didnt feel the need to exercise. I just came back at it hard when i was cleared. I'm still in my vector 10.0's, with the inside ankle punched out. have ankle protection for it, too. It's not going to be fun picking out a skate next time around. -
and who else has the name JR. nobody.

are those a carbon fiber boot? dont you have screws? i'd find a boot that you can punch out and manipulate... that'd be my only advice. I was thinking about s15's, but in retrospect, it's probably good i didnt go with them.
