  1. this is a great read, just thought I'd give some input from the other end of the spectrum too.

My dad grew up playing OHL then OUA then had a pro career in Europe before coaching professionally in Europe for over 20 years.

Hockey was obviously my main sport growing up but my dad was very understanding of the game and refused to be an over involved parent. He would help out especially in my earlier years.

As I got older and into more serious levels of hockey he would come to as many games as he could make it to and afterwards would only give me an honest assessment if I asked him. His analytical mind from coaching would obviously take over here, but it was always positive and reassurances it was never "you looked bad during this play" it was more "when this guy has the puck, you did this but when you do that heres what happens and what ended up happening, whereas the play to look for is to do this and that way the whole play changes".

He obviously wanted me to pursue hockey as far as I could and I played right through Juniors, but he would only ever be hard on me if I asked for it. he would never pressure me into work outs or to focus or practice more unless I said "what do I need to get better at" and still to this day I respect and admire that about him. He is always willing but never forceful.

He is also a huge advocate for being multi sport athletes, especially in the summer months. once my season ended I wouldn't open my hockey bag until July or August to do power skating and high intensity ice sessions leading up to training camp. His theory is people dont burn out that way and the ones who really love it come back even hungrier.

  2. scanning your feet isnt designed to be the end all be all, it's a tool that good shop employees will use as an aid in the fitting process. Though the results are not always accurate as was the case here I dont think that holds any weight in Bauer and CCM's custom options.

If I'm talking to a customer about skates their size and weight is always brought up, same with frequency of use. Some custom options I find to be more durable than others especially for the bigger guys who are hard on them.

Looking solely at the direct retail aspect, I don't know how much impact it will have. If small shops couldn't compete with big online retailers they probably went out of business last decade. If Bauer is like most manufacturers selling direct, prices will be full retail, plus tax, plus shipping, and often more restrictive return policies. So I don't see it as particularly appealing from a consumer standpoint. It could be helpful for individuals looking for unusual sizing, uncommon curves/flexes, etc. that are harder find even at larger retailers. I could be wrong, but I don't see myself buying directly from Bauer.

    This.

If I'm buying off the Bauer website I better get my choice of flex and curve that expands on the 4 that most shops stock. That would be the only incentive to purchase off their site directly.

  4. Team sales are an absolute gold mine for LHS' because most of the time the OEM dont eant to deal with the headache.

In the span of 18 months we grew from being supplier of 4 teams to supplying a total of 12 JR A and JR B teams, a university team and two entire associations, and this is just hockey. we do baseball associations now as well.

Apparel, Bags, jerseys, coaching packages, and equipment bundles all make life easy. bundles usually means finding a set price for gloves pants helmet+cage or visor and a number of sticks depending on the team and the owners.

Keeps us busy, especially in the dog days.

Maybe Bauer realized it’s product portfolio is bloated. Too many models in each category with not enough (other than price) to differentiate from one to the other. Right now, the Vapor line has 8 models, Supreme like has 7 and the Nexus line has 6. Thats 23 different skates over 3 product lines.

They could get by with four. Two top end (Curv boots) a mid range and an entry level.

They are doing this to a certain extent, lowering the number of options available in each line and adjusting price points accordingly. Shops end up sitting on way too much inventory and as mentioned marking product down is a head ache from their head office.

If you're in Canada the Source for Sports shops figured this out years ago, hence why they only offer SMU models below the top of the line. hits every price point/performance level and doesnt overflow inventory

  6. Being a specialty store will help. Especially on skates. tongues, repairs, shot blockers, holders, profiling will all help you immensely. What level are the travel teams? I would definitely look at doing team supply if possible, but you will have to talk to the OEM's about what they can do for you, but if you're able to outfit an entire association it could be a good stream of cash flow. Additionally, become friends with an embroidery place that can take care of name bars and stitching for any apparel and jerseys that could end up going through your shop. another viable opportunity.

From what I've been told (and what I had to do) you must supply them with the holders. Otherwise, they'll just mount True holders OR just send back a boot without pre-drilled holes.

We would include the holder with the purchase when customers got customs done, so if they wanted the True holder we added it to the order but if they wanted Edge holders we would order boot only, pre drilled for Tuuks and install upon arrival and then let the customer know they were in.

  8. What I love about the Vegas team is that they are built with the Moneyball mindset. Each player was picked to do one thing, and they are doing their jobs right. Add in the fact that everybody has bought in on the team and they are a very well oiled machine.

I don't care for Wingels with Krejci and DeBrusk. I would much prefer Rick Nash or Donato on that line. How many plays last night died because Wingels can't match the skill of the other two? He is a nice plugger but shouldn't be riding on the second line. And if Krug pounds one more shot into shin pads I'm going to personally go down there and revoke his shooting privileges.

it astounds me how many bruins miss the net on a consistent basis. I watched Pasta put 4 wide on one shift last night

Does Abdelkader still use a P91-variant? Or did he move to the P92? Because Larkin uses the P92 so maybe now he'll realize that curve is ass and the P91 and its heel-curve brethren are the best :D

I wouldn't be surprised if Abdelkader has a bunch of different curves that he's tinkered with.

I remember when a friend of mine who is close friends with Toews returned from a visit with a bundle of his sticks and there was every curve from a wedge to a kovy clone mixed in, all made for Toews.

  11. Thought this could be an interesting topic of discussion especially since it's been a hot topic as of late.

My biggest pet peeve with this call in general, is when the defenceman is directly involved in a player making contact with the goalie. Last night in the Pittsburgh Toronto game doumolin (sp?) cut to the net, the d man blatantly pushes him in the back and incidental contact was made with Andersson resulting in not only the goal being disallowed but a penalty being given to the penguins, even though it was the leafs dman that forced it to happen.

I think international rule could work, if you're in the crease at all play gets blown dead face off goes to the outside of the zone. and incidental contact outside of the crease is just that, incidental. if my back is to the goalie and I'm out of the blue paint and brush against him there s no reason it should get called, it's getting ridiculous.

  12. Lol, and if you've seen a Bauer skate get produced, there s tape used in them as well, they just add another layer on top under the insoles.

Bashing a company in a thread dedicated specifically to that company is extremely immature considering your only experience with them is through word of mouth. I would say that in the cost bracket of top of the line skates, Trues aren't even the ones that need to get rivets fixed as often as some of your favourites.

You've made it clear, you don't like them for no apparent reason and you're content with a skate off the shelf. There's no need to be a dick just to be a dick.
