The Senators do something like this, where they have a curriculum of hockey/Sens related activities/lessons for different subject areas (science, math, etc). I agree it sounds like a great opportunity for practical, hands-on cross-curricular stuff. So much going on at a professional (or even collegiate) game that you could tie in. Math, science, phys ed, English (write about going to the rink, write a 'news article' about the game), heck, cooking (if you think arena food qualifies as food)...

At the rink after stick & puck last night, I happened to notice that one of the kids playing in the game after was one of the kids I'd coached last year. So proud to see him. Nice to see the kids going on to bigger and better things.

It's been a terrible month. Messy family drama over Thanksgiving plans, two friends being hospitalized, another friend sick + his dogs are sick, my own mental health crisis resulting in a visit to the urgent care, and now it turns out my fiancee's cat is dying. She lives over 800 miles from me, so I can't even be there for her. wtf.

Our water heater died. Luckily, it's under warranty, so we get a new one. Not so luckily, the one we have was out of stock so we won't get a new one until Monday afternoon or so. Ugh.

Couldn't post at the time, but while camping over Columbus Day weekend I caught the biggest trout (or fish, in general) I've ever caught. 13 1/2 inch rainbow trout. Not sure how much it weighed, my dad figured 3 pounds.

League told me repeatedly, 'you'll be helping out with [x] team this year', come to find out as of yesterday, 'oh sorry we already assigned everyone, we're not sure if you can help out with anybody this season'. Feeling like there's some deliberate miscommunication happening, trying not to think that. Still frustrated.

Thanks! I swam competitively when I was a kid, and I've always been really comfortable in the water, but I've only recently begun to really get back into doing laps and the like. Next big goal (aside from shaving my time down further) is doing a pool mile. :)

Beat my personal best time in the pool (500 yards breaststroke - I usually swim two sets of 500, not competitive, just an ordinary workout) by nearly a minute and finally pummeled the time to under 15 minutes. 14:19:13.

Had a thoroughly great birthday with friends yesterday, picnic, swimming in the ocean, and breakfast for dinner, plus new art supplies and cake. Will celebrate with family tonight.

My mom's stuck in the hospital again, this time because after her dermatologist removed a "thing" (her words) on her scalp (on Monday), it wouldn't stop bleeding. The derm sorted it and they're keeping her in the hospital for observation, because her red cell count was low. But really, why do things keep going all pear shaped? At least it's just for the night.

Really glad to hear you got a diagnosis and a good medication combo that's working for you, and support from family and friends. Keep it up and be well. :)

Got to go to the Harvard Museum today and spend a full hour poring over the glass flowers exhibit. Truly extraordinary pieces.

I'm not sure we have the drinking part quite down, either, though one of our umps has suggested he can be bribed with Captain Morgan...

Haha well this is only our 2nd year playing as a group, and we won like 4 of 18 last year. We've got a couple of people who've either never played softball, or only played for one year so far. We're pretty decent, all things considered, it's just the other teams in the division are quite a bit more decent. ;) Good luck to your team.

Failed my learner's permit exam because I missed all the junior operator law questions, which don't apply to me . Feel old and also broke. Gotta cough up the $30, study the junior operator laws, and take it again tomorrow. What a headache. (yes, I am 26 and don't have a license. I haven't ever really needed one thus far.)

Helped bring a little lost dog and her owner back together yesterday, through a series of very lucky coincidences. Her family is very happy.

My mom's out of the hospital and doing well, started outpatient therapy yesterday. Good to have her home.

My mom isn't as frail as "stroke" would imply - she's certainly coherent and cognizant of what's going on around her, cracking wise, etc. Having seen her yesterday, she seems to be doing pretty well.

My dad acquiesced to taking me with him for a visit this afternoon. She's doing about as I expected, though if there's a rehab bed available they may spring her as early as tomorrow, since they've done all their evals. Good deal, I suppose.

Transportation is complicated but I'll see if I can go with my dad tonight. Other things are complicated and, even if I want to see her, she may not want to see me. But we'll see how that goes.
