  1. you need to work on flexibility bro.  I dont know if you work out, i take my lunch hour at work at just spend the entire time in my in house gym at work.  Work on stretches, work on leg strength building.   No better way around that, when i look at my videos from the last two years (been playing for 3 now) i can tell a huge difference in my flexibility and movement.

    simply put, stretch, work out.

  2. And thanks to my friend Matt for giving me pointers in the last few weeks

there's a reason I like putting up footage, so better goalies can help me out

he's been talking to me how to challenge more which I felt I was doing better In This one

theres lots for me to improve and thats been a glaring one

  3. I've been playing on and off for three years now including almost 1.5 year of time off from injury in the last two years

I'm aware I suck but I'm a gamer when needed

i went to Las Vegas for the NCHL draft tournament and they finally sent me the video from February where I won the shootout for the B championship

ive never won shit in hockey as a forward or goalie so this was a cool feeling

Guy almost kills himself at 1.13 haha.     Your movement looks very lazy but its very fluid so it's cool to watch.  You got beat by a nice shot though near the end.   I'm got my second game this weekend so I'll see if someone can hook my camera up behind and take some footage, my movement will be very bad and I think i'l find my angles will be off, but hopefully some of the videos I've been watching might help.

I've gotta fiddle with some toe ties and see if I can get my straps sorted as I think I have them too tight, just don't have the ice time to play around with them here in New Zealand considering I live an hour away from the rink.

That guy actually left the game so I think he got hurt

and thank you, I think to make it feel natural and comfortable

to my style of movement. If it looks lazy, it's cause I'm being lazy, this is more laidback

    than Anything.

as for the straps it's all to everyone

I would suggest starting semi loose and work

    your way around.

Personally, I don't use boot straps  and the pads I used leg straps on

it was 2.5" at the toe ties before I switched to the monster hockey bungee style ones that are able to extend and go back to normal since they're elastic.

for leg straps I had a loose knee strap and a semi loose calf one.  Plus the elastic straps  that's it

with these warriors I use the elastic toe ties and the three leg elastic straps including the one below the knee for a very open knee landing

Cheers fellas.    I've been on youtube for the past few weeks checking out anything and everything goalie related so I can se ehow that will help pickup the little things that add up to a solid foundation.

I have a Go Pro so i'll try to bring it along to the next game   (shitty scheduling means I have 4 games in 2 months). I want to see myself but at teh same time I don't want too as it will be embarrasing as hell.

I don't really have the money available to get new gear/gear that fits so I'm kind of stuck for a bit. I really want to get some pro stock gloves at some point as I feel that'll be best bang for buck.  I currently have a set of Full right TPS Response R5 gloves which just feels and look kind of small and the stick feels very small.    I'm not sure on leg pad sizing as they don't have them printed but they look like Itech RX9 Pro stock/Custom leg pads, they seem to have great protection from shots, but my knees are killing me after every time I wear them. Bruises all over my knees.

Also ThinkingJack  I can see you like to use your stick alot when in goal, can almost tell you're an out player playing in goal by the way you use your stick to poke and block cross passes.   I'm very similar, except with the short stick I can never seem to get good contact on the puck so I end up leaning forward and getting off balance and not begin able to recover.

The first goalie is Matt, he has a rough time playing the puck but he plays out too, he's just kinda harder about trying to stop passes and poke away.  I tend to be a little different with how i use my stick to take away shots only if needed, i've found that if i throw my stick out it'll most likely bounce to a player who can knock it in.  Or in two cases, knock it in myself,  I do however play the puck a lot in games since i do play out too.

as for your gear, don't buy new, buy good condition pro stock or higher end used.   As long as the internal plastics aren't broken, you'd be ok for a while on a lot of stuff.

  6. Take your time man, go to stick times and have a friend or two shoot on you for specific movements, gloves, and legs, going down and trying to take shots and controlling them. After a while you will realize you can actually redirect rebounds to the corners or far out. I had the same issues in the last three years since i began playing.  Now i feel ive gotten better with movements and have improved as time has gone by. Look up goalie drills and butterfly techniques on youtube. You can learn so much.

  7. And I'm back!

had a skills and drills thing I do with friends and you see me skate as a player and i found out two goalies who showed up bailed so I jumped off and got my goalie gear on.

it was rough since I'm wearing someone else's leg pads last minute but I had a fun time.  First 13 minutes is drills and another goalie playing out and goofing around. Then I arrive at the 13ish Mark

  8. Length of use – 6 months

Fit – I have a huge head, huge, if I grow my hair out it actually will cause a fit issue with my player helmets and my goalie mask.   Fit is a big issue.  As we know, a properly fitting helmet is a huge benefactor to staying protected.  In my Large Bauer 5100 I had it halfway extended in its setting to fit my fat melon and sometimes that still felt lacking.  In what came as a huge surprise, the Bauer Reakt Large was big fitting.  A bigger surprise? I wear a Medium in the Reakt and it fits perfect.   I’m quite shocked.   And I still feel like someone is pranking me and switched the sizes up on my helmet with a medium.  Even when I had hair down to my mouth, it still fit perfect.  Unlike most Bauer helmets I also have not had an issue with the helmet riding forward, which is what my 5500 and 8500 were notorious for.  The 5100 fit perfect except one or two times when my hair was longer.  This helmet grips my head and it’s over.  10/10

Protection – I’m starting to believe I’m one of those few unlucky people that get a new piece of gear and almost instantly its put to use.   The second game I had this helmet on, I caught a clearing pass right above the ear piece on the side of the helmet.  It didn’t hurt as bad as the previous time I caught a slap shot to my ear lobe.  But I felt it. It didn’t hurt. I felt the smack of the puck colliding with the shell of the helmet and felt the poron foam compress against me to take the brunt of the force and deaden it and nothing came of it.  I also took a vicious hit from behind that hurt my hip while wearing this and drove my head into the glass, I came out ok.  Well, my hip didn’t, but my head was fine.   So far that’s two.   I will easily say the protection of the impacts both being very different ones worked and the memory foam/poron did its job. 10/10

Weight – My Bauer 5100 felt very heavy, but when you have something heavy or light, and put it on as its normal use would dictate, you don’t notice too much after that.   This helmet is light compared to the 5100, much lighter, it’s not lighter than that 700 helmet by Easton but then again that’s basically a bike helmet. I was actually concerned with this helmet riding up because it felt like my visor was heavier, it wasn’t the case, and I’m very glad about it.   For its weight, I’m well ok with it. 10/10

Durability – So far I have used this helmet for 6 months, well 5 if you include me taking about 1 month or so off to heal my hip and knee.  That aside, this helmet has survived slamming into the glass, a shot to the side, and my gallons of sweat. Speaking of sweat, normally because how much I sweat, I’ll sometimes have sweat just pouring down my face if my helmet shifts and you can feel (it’s disgusting) the sweat building up on the top of my head.   This helmet is extremely ventilated though, I feel the air going through my vents and cooling me down, so it’s possible it’s evaporating it faster than previous helmets.   It’s a huge plus honestly!  Normally sweat also breaks down glues and foams and I haven’t had this issue either, I tend to wipe off my helmet when I’m done and the top is dry.  It’s held on; I’ve had no issues with the screws or any parts yet. And I’m happy with it. 10/10

Intangibles – I already sung you the praise for handling sweat and durability after the issues vie had.  The only other one would be its look, I really like how sleek and ventilated it looks without looking like a big bulky piece in attempts to protect more, something companies kind of sacrifice to make a helmet with, Like the M11 type of helmets like the IMS11, although the IMS9 is pretty neat (same shell as the Reakt)  So the ventilation and the look of the shell are a big one for me, I love the sleek look of the shell and how deep it fits, and of course the ventilation that comes from this design.   Don’t change it, alas never mind, it looks like the reakt100 is different slightly but whatever.  9/10

Conclusion – The price tag on this helmet would normally scare any person.  But it all comes down to fit, comfort and use.  It’s my firm belief that you should replace your hockey helmet every 2 years, 3 at most. Old style helmets with Rubatex/VN liners tend to go rock solid after a few years of use and that’s an accident waiting to happen.  If you see those old guys wearing the old school CCM helmets and cooper ones, ask them if you can feel the foams and you’ll see what I mean. Most are rock solid, is that really protective?  Not one bit.

Depending on your style of play and how many times a week, you can break it down to price/# of uses= price per use.  I use my helmet 2 times a week on average, sometimes three, but for math sakes I’ll say 2.

It’s on clearance right now at 199$, that equals to 52 weeks, 104 uses, 199/104=about 1.91$ per time I use it. That’s just on one year.

That’s bang for your buck. This is your brain, don’t skimp.

    If it fits, get it.

    Final score - 49/50 = 9.8/10

  9. This is great news because I finally found a goalie skate that feels amazing and happens to be a pair of Graf G75

its too bad graf did away with the G75 player skate model, on a bright note, this lets me try to find some NT5000 holders for my custom steel and c an throw those in on my other pair of skates

  10. Started working out again this week, 4 weeks off working out and playing hockey is too damn much, and ive gained weight, so I'm annoyed.

Started doing regular work outs plus stretches for my hip and knee and leg workouts to strengthen my knee, the nerve damage on my hip still hurts but its hurting less now that I'm being active again, I skated on Tuesday night as a forward and although my footspeed was trash (more trash than it usually is) I started to feel good again and felt my balance and mobility partially coming back.

its a stepping stone, and oh right, new goalie pads arrive soon.  it's getting real again.

  11. Sherwood Rekker EK60 95 Flex P26 Stastny

Stick History: Warrior QRL/QR1Pro/QR1, Sherwood T100/T120, Warrior Dynasty HD1, True A6.0, Bauer MX3, Bauer TotalJuan, STX Surgeon/RX2, STX Stallion, Verbero Latigo Pro, CCM Tacks, Easton V9E

    Stick Info: Height: uncut

    Weight: 387 Grams

    Grip: No

    Shaft:  Matte/grip

    Length: 59 inches

    Usage: 6 Months

Personal Details: Male, 6'3", 260lbs, 31 years old, Loves Carnitas Burritos.

About me: I’ve played goalie on and off since about 1998, and Player since 1996, I also like long walks down short hallways.

Review Details: I’ve been using this stick for about 6 months since I received it, on and off with two other brands which lets me offer some detail and differences to be able to tell “oh ok this is different about it” and figure out where and what I like about it.

Grip: I LOVE grip sticks, some more than others, some are just too sticky feeling.  The Bauer texture bumps grip is fantastic, and the original nipple grip that Warrior has is my main baby. I don’t mind smooth or satin sticks but I just doesn’t feel right, the Sherwood grip is a nice mixture of stickiness without ever feeling like my palms are glued on, and that’s great.  10/10

Aesthetics: Normally, when I get a stick to test out I usually get it in black with just the logo in white. I like to keep that type of look because people look at it and always approach me “hey what’s this black stick about” and BAM hooked, and I’m explaining away and offering to let them try it if they’re a lefty. In this case I got the full regular graphic which I actually liked, solid black base, and the red and white accents. It actually looked snazzy.  However I was thrown off when someone said it resembled an original APX which once I looked it up, I guess it made sense but this outperforms that stick. Nothing to complain here, move along. 9/10

Blade/Curve: Currently I want to pay Sherwood or somehow convince them to change the name of the Stastny curve to my name, because that’s my curve, I love it, I live by it. So the curve is perfect, naturally.   The blade of course the construction is a little similar to the T120 so that sings my song.  It’s nice and stiff, responsive, and hardly any back flex. I LOVE IT.  I’ve been violent and abusive to this stick and blade and it hasn’t cracked or snapped, or popped. It’s remained rigid and stiff and the only wear is the air bubbles in the paint popping out but that happens with any blade.   The highlight of this stick was the blade, it felt good and it gave good response to any type of shot I tried, and showed little to no wear no matter how hard I tried to damage it including people stepping on it.

    Curve: 10/10, Blade: 10/10

Stick Handling: The stick being so light, it made stickhandling seem like I was going much faster than I was used to.  Sure it’s light, but I’m coming from CCM Tacks, and T120s and V9Eso those are already extremely light.  So it’s changing it up but enough to feel then difference but not say “oh it’s too light” like some of the people who tried mine said.  Then again they were using mid-level and wood sticks, so of course it was too light. The main adjustment was the whip of the shaft. I was shocked how whippy this shaft turned out to be compared to the T120 shaft, I’ll give it that, 95 flex felt way lighter which played into my shooting.  It made it more effortless. In the end you want to be able to stick handle like there’s nothing but your hands and speed of your arms and hands moving the puck for you, this stick won’t get in the way.  I play defense and as a center as well, never seemed to have an issue stick handling around and through groups.

      8/10

Shooting: The whip is the only issue for me and although sometimes it was annoying, there were some great benefits like using it for taking quick wrist shots from the point and I actually scored a few goals off the faceoff. That being said, shots came off hard and crisp, like my passing as stated below, it felt like this added some extra power to everything.  Sometimes it felt like a good thing sometimes it did not. I think what would have made a bigger difference was going up on the flex scale to make it feel closer to the actual flex I use.  I think that would have made me happier.  I essentially didn’t like the low kick and how whippy it was.   Comparing the low kick and taper to something like Warrior’s QRL taper, this felt whippier and it threw me off and made me over correct and adjust too much.  I had to cut down the stick an inch to give it some stiffness which already gave me an issue, I use tall sticks because I’m tall, cutting them down makes me crouch lower from my comfort shooting zone and creates havoc.  Ask the goalies I play with, they don’t enjoy mask shots.   I did score plenty and get good assits, the one timer was too whippy but a wrist and snap shot while skating or standing still was very good, and shooting was as effortless as cutting a deck of cards for the dealer at a table.  If you skip arm day, this stick will still give you a good hard shot.  If you don’t, you might murder someone.

So hey, it worked ok sometimes.

     8/10.

Passing: Passes were coming off harder than normal and people were having trouble handling them.  Some folks had their sticks blow out of their hands and one in particular asked me to stop shooting the puck at him.  Once I began adjusting the force of my passes, the stick was still whippy but was used to my full advantage. I was able to clear the puck out of my zone on penalty kills like nobody’s business. Receiving passes was another adjustment I had to make, with the stick being so whippy accepting passes sometimes shot the puck right back just off the shaft flexing back and then forward.  It only happened twice, but it made us stop and stare at my stick and go “uh, let’s try that again and see if it actually happened. This is more user based, if you’re putting some hammer into your passes like you should, sometimes the flex of the shaft will just give err a little more than you think

    10/10

    Durability: Sherwood states even on
the stick itself and on the description on the site that they’re applying
Graphene for durability in the slash zones most sticks take the damage.  You better believe it sure has stayed strong
in my case with banging it over the crossbar and on the bench and glass in
frustration.  It has been stepped on; it
has been slashed and has refused to die. Someday it might but it hasn’t yet.   Most sticks also wear down and you can feel
the decrease in performance, one thing about Sherwood is they’ve kept KEPT
KEPT, the performance on all sticks from start to finish entirely and majorly
consistent.   I didn’t have this issue
with the T line, and I haven’t yet with the EK line. Sherwood will always keep
me happy with consistency and durability. This stick hasn’t let me down at all.

    10/10

Feel: Graphene is a very strong and light material
that can be stronger than steel but lighter than a feather.   It sure as heck is light, paired with the
stiff as hell blade I love; I can feel the puck wherever I roam. The puck feel
is phenomenal and I haven’t had a single issue with it, ever. This is one of
the saving graces for the stick, just being able to know the puck is somewhere
on the blade and know where it will be when firing any shot. Off the toe, off
the heel, off the middle, either or.
    10/10

Closing: Would I recommend this stick?  Absolutely.

If you’re a guy using lighter flexes and low kick sticks,
this is the stick for you. It gives you great hard shots, low kick performance
like no other, a great price, and the durability alone pays you back.   Which let’s face it; today’s hockey market
is plagued by great shooting sticks, that have Eggshell technology for
    durability.

Not this one, no, absolutely not this one.  This is a mold breaker when it comes to
    performing but lasting.  It’s outlasted
two pairs of skates of mine already.  Yet
feels like the day I took it out of the box.

If you’re more of a guy who likes mid kick sticks, for more
power than snapping out quick shots?  It
might not work out for you but for the price point, you can try it.  People vie converted to it have loved it
    already.

    Overall Score: 8.5/10

  12. So my ACL injury healed without needing surgery, thank goodness.

Last week while playing out so I could use my demo sticks I had sent to me, I got crushed on the boards by some dummy, completely gave me nerve damage on my hip, apparently its my sciatica nerve.  Walking and sitting, let alone exercise and hockey are a complete painful disaster.

Its gonna be a long wait before I can play net.  Kinda bummed, I had worked so hard in rehabbing the ACL and now this.

@Thinkingjack That sucks. I hope your rehab goes quickly and you're right as rain in no time.

When someone jumps on your knee, it is scary stuff- ESPECIALLY when they are HEAVY. Glad to hear nothing major happened.

I think the fat hero deserves a knee-capping with your goal stick the next time you play against him.

thanks man, i'm not too much into being that goalie but i have started playing out as a forward because playing out doesn't make my knee feel like its falling apart.  He has since taken a few pucks off his body, its amazing how i can make a shot to his body look accidental.

  14. some Fat dumb hero decided to crash the net after i covered the puck and the whistle blew about 3 weeks ago, in the process he fell into me and since i was on the butterfly he landed on top of my right leg (knee area) and crushed the shit out of me pushing me back hyper flexing it to the point that i started laughing from the pain  and saying "ow my knee get the hell off me before i slit your throat"

went to the doctor and they said to rehab it and stay out of the net for at least a month maybe longer

  15. Howdy,

Wait, they offered you a job, then changed their mind and gave the job to someone else? And then decided that if you wanted you could have the in house guy's old job for a bunch less money?

Sounds to me like they did you a favor by illustrating that you don't want to work there during the hiring process!

You're for sure doing the right thing.

They did me a huge favor. Now i can weed it out to a different company offering a job that was concrete and competing with this one.

Another girl on the team got a concussion playing with the 19U girls last weekend. She thinks its "minor" and is begging us to come play at 14U state this weekend.

    No fucking way.

The first girl is still out, and missed a ton of school, life, and hockey this season. No way do I want to know that this happened to another kid.

She's going to be pissed at us for not letting her play, but in the great grand scheme of things, she will be far better off to heal a couple of weeks and get back into life. A second concussion right now just has too many horrible risks.

It sucks that I get to be the messenger, but at least the message is out there for me to communicate. A lot of players lives have been irreparably damaged first because nobody knew the risks of multiple concussions, and next because nobody did anything about it. Now that we're doing something about it, feelers are hurt, but I can live with that.

Please remind me I'm doing the right thing, my friends. :)

YOU are absolutely doing the right thing, that kids future and health are very important and she might not like it now but she will thank you in the future when she gets over it.

  16. got a job offered to me monday, started the hiring process (background check etc)

got a call yesterday that they went with in house for the position but since the person who got the the position i was offered left theirs, i can come in under that dudes position. Bittersweet, and shitty, but whatever just pay me.

however they offered me much MUCH less than what i was originally offered so now the question is, do i take the pay cut? or go elsewhere?

and 10 seconds later, who am i kidding? i'm not taking a pay cut

  17. you know what? i originally started with a cisco hand held IFlip camera. That thing was awesome. Great memory, long lasting battery, i still use it for certain things and it survived being put on the crossbar of my net and on the glass so even though it doesn't have a case, its tough as nails, i once shot the entire lens clean off the camera and popped it back in, no issues at all.

Search for it on ebay and buy a suction cup mount and put it on the glass.

  18. Nice!

Can I make a suggestion? Edit your video to shorter clips. Too much time between plays for the viewer (me) to keep interest ;)

I was dying at 1:54... It didn't appear to be a line change or anything but nobody was moving, at all! I was yelling at my screen "whats going on!!!" haha

Made some great saves man. Movement is looking pretty good too. Keep at it!

The reason i left the video with blank moments is to show that the camera side was boring as crap.

Original video was 3 hours. this is the "highlights"
